Blue Raiders drop battle against the Bulldogs

MT falls 75-68 on the road at LA Tech
RUSTON, La. – In a rowdy arena of 6,214 fans, Middle Tennessee (10-8, 3-2 C-USA) fell 75-68 to LA Tech as the Bulldogs extended their home-court winning streak to 22 and remain undefeated (5-0) in league play.
The game's energetic start set the pace for the game as the Bulldogs won the tip and immediately drove in to dunk but Jacquez Rozier made a powerful block to stop the attempt.
Within the first eight minutes of the game the Blue Raiders and the C-USA preseason favorite Bulldogs went through seven lead changes and six ties as they found a 16-16 tie going into the under 12 media timeout.
Heading into the locker rooms at halftime, MT and LA Tech were tied at 35-35 with the Blue Raiders forcing the Bulldogs into nine turnover and the bench picking up 16 first-half points. There were 15 total lead changes in the first half alone.
The Blue Raiders second half shooting percentage was the difference maker as the team shot 28.6 percent in the second half compared to 43.3 percent in the first half.
The Blue Raiders suffered a 4:32 minute scoring drought when they went 0-for-4 but only allowed the Bulldogs to extend to a five point lead as La Tech led 49-44 with a little over 12 minutes remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs would piece together a 17-2 run to grab a 13 point lead over the Blue Raiders in the second half.
The Blue Raiders pieced a late 6-0 run late in the game to bring MT with in eight points at 66-58. MT would continue to work hard defensively and get within two-possessions with a steal by JaQawn Raymond off the press but were unable to make the final push.
LA Tech's Alex Hamilton was unstoppable as he registered a game-high 30 points with 20 of those points coming from the charity stripe, hitting 20-of-23.
The Blue Raider bench posted another strong outing with Reggie Upshaw (12) and Raymond (11) recording double digits to boost the bench to 37 points on the night.
Perrin Buford pulled down a career-high 11 boards to lead all players in the game, while he added 9 points. MT won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Bulldogs 40-36.
JaQuel Richmond led the Blue Raiders in scoring with a career-high 14 points, while Rozier tied a career-high in blocks with three in the game.
The Blue Raiders return home to host Old Dominion on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast on the American Sports Network (ASN). The Monarchs are receiving votes in the Top-25 Coaches Poll.
