Blue Raiders win 68-58 in OT
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's basketball team outlasted Old Dominion 68-58 during an overtime thriller in Conference-USA action Thursday night at the Murphy Center.
A dramatic finish at the end of regulation provided plenty of entertainment for nearly 5,000 fans in attendance. ODU's Jonathan Arledge made a three-pointer with 20 seconds in regulation, lifting the Monarchs to their first lead of the second half.
"It was great to have the student body back," head coach Kermit Davis said. "It created a nice atmosphere and our players really appreciated that."
Giddy Potts drained a deep three-pointer with two minutes left in OT, sparking a 9-0 run to put the Blue Raiders up for good. MT outscored the visiting Monarchs 14-4 in the extra period.
Then, with what proved to be the trend of the closely-contested meeting, MT answered when Jacob Ivory drove the left side of the lane and tied the game on a layup with nine seconds to go.
Middle Tennessee (11-8, 4-2 C-USA) led for a total of 33 minutes, but ODU's inside presence kept the game close as the Monarchs outscored the Blue Raiders 28-16 in the post.
The Blue Raiders stayed afloat thanks to nine three's and 39 points from the reserve players.
It was the fourth game that saw at least four Raiders reach double digits in the scoring column. Ivory led the way with a career-high 12, while Darnell Harris and Giddy Potts both chipped in with 11 points. Jaqawn Raymond scored a huge basket near the end of OT to reach 10 points on the night.
The Blue Raiders finished shooting at a 46-percent clip from the field, while going 9-of-19 (47 percent) from three-point range.
MT and ODU went back and forth in the first half, exchanging the lead six times and knotting the score up on eight occasions as the Blue Raiders took a 33-30 lead into the break. MT actually held a three-point advantage eight times, but never increased the lead by more than that in the opening 20 minutes.
The Blue Raiders shot nearly 50 percent in the half and distributed the ball evenly as eight different players registered at least one point.
A 7-0 spurt out the locker room quickly gave the Blue Raiders the largest lead of the game 40-30, but ODU responded with eight unanswered to get back within two points with 14 minutes remaining.
From there, the pace settled down as both teams clamped down defensively.
Giddy Potts ended a six-minute scoring drought by draining a three-pointer at 7:33, and followed up with another trey at the 4:53 mark to put the Blue Raiders up 50-44.
However, ODU stuck to the script and tied the game at 50 with two minutes left before the game was sent to overtime.
"It's just fun," Davis said. "We've been right in the middle of league races for a long time now and it feels good to be there, but we've still got a long way to go. We know we're coming back to play a really talented Charlotte team on Saturday."
ODU (15-3, 4-2 C-USA) was led by Trey Freeman's game-high 18 points as MT limited the Monarchs to 36 percent from the field.
The Blue Raiders out-rebounded the Monarchs 37-36; ODU was ranked 15th nationally in rebounding margin this year (+8.2). Old Dominion also ranked ninth in the country in scoring defense, only allowing opponents to score 55.4 points per game this season.
Thursday night's win improves MT's ledger to 11-1 when scoring at least 60 points this season, while the Blue Raiders remain undefeated (5-0) against ODU all-time.
Middle Tennessee returns to action on Saturday night when it welcomes Charlotte to the Glass House. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
