Blue Raiders defeat Charlotte 72-69
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After trailing the entire second half, Middle Tennessee's Jaqawn Raymond drilled a go-ahead three with under two minutes remaining to topple Charlotte 72-69 Saturday afternoon.
The fourth consecutive home win is the largest come-from-behind victory for the Blue Raiders this season after going down 12 points in the first half.
Middle Tennessee (12-8, 5-2 C-USA) trailed for nearly 33 minutes and went down 10 at the half, but the defense came through when it mattered most. The Blue Raiders limited the visitors to just one field goal down the stretch and forced three crucial turnovers to seal the win.
Jacquez Rozier led the way after going 5-of-5 from the field with 13 points and four rebounds. Jacob Ivory matched his career-high output from two nights ago with 12 points, while Darnell Harris also reached double figures with 10 points and five boards.
Raymond's huge trey was his only field goal of the night as the senior contributed a career-best six assists.
"He has made a ton of those (big) shots," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "He made them at Marshall last year. He made the game winner at FIU. In big moments, he's made shots like that before."
Middle Tennessee shot a blistering 58 percent in the second half and ended the game shooting at a 49-percent clip. Charlotte (8-11, 2-5 C-USA) shot 49 percent for the game as well, but hit just 3-of-10 shots over the final seven-plus minutes.
The Blue Raiders led 15-7 early in the first half after a Harris three-pointer sparked a 13-2 run. However, the 49ers immediately responded with their own 13-0 spurt to reclaim the lead by a score of 20-15 with nine minutes left in the half.
Charlotte hit five treys in the opening 20 minutes, while shooting 50 percent from the field to build its 10-point advantage at the break. MT shot 42 percent and just 2-of-11 (18 percent) from three-point range.
MT kept chipping away at the lead throughout the second half, highlighted by key plays from DJ Jones and Giddy Potts. Jones came off the bench and scored on a fast-break layup to get within five points at 12:17. Two minutes later, Potts trimmed the deficit to three after knocking down his only trey.
Marcus Tarrance converted two free throws, cutting the Charlotte lead to just two points before Raymond came up clutch one minute later.
"I really think that was just a crowd victory," Davis said. "I'm serious; I think home court won out today. Our toughness was great. Charlotte was tremendous. I just think the home court won. Our student section, our crowd, the community, it just helped us in our comeback and we couldn't have won without them."
MT out-rebounded Charlotte 30-23 on the glass, while the bench contributed 34 points.
With the victory, MT improves to 12-1 when scoring at least 60 points this season.
The Blue Raiders continue league play next week when they travel to UTSA on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
