Records School's First Triple Double As Team Wins Fifth Straight
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Senior Cheyenne Parker registered the first triple-double in program history and the Middle Tennessee Women's basketball team won its fifth straight with a 74-53 victory over UTEP Saturday in Murphy Center.
With the win, the Blue Raiders handed UTEP (8-10, 3-5 C-USA) its first five-game losing streak since the 2004-05 season while matching Middle Tennessee's longest win streak of the season. The Blue Raiders (14-5, 8-1) won for the 10th time in 11 games and remained tied atop the C-USA standings.
Parker finished the contest with 18 points, 17 boards and an impressive 11 blocks in just 29 minutes, while setting the school record in swats as well, surpassing her own record of nine from earlier this season.
The Queens, N.Y., native nearly had a triple-double in the second half alone as she faced early foul trouble in the first half. Parker's triple-double is the ninth all-time in Conference USA and the 16th triple-double in the NCAA this season.
Parker, who came close to a triple-double on two other occasions, notched the milestone with her 10th block with 7:24 remaining. Sophomore guard Ty Petty showcased an efficient performance with 10 points, five rebounds and dished out five assists. Junior Brea Edwards connected on three treys for nine points, and senior guard Shanice Cason distributed the ball spectacularly with a team-high eight assists to zero miscues.
All it took was a layup on the first possession to get Jones going as she scored 10 of the team's 12 points during a 12-0 run over the first 6:33 of the contest. The Miners wouldn't get their first points of the first half until the 13:27 mark, while not hitting a field goal until there was 13:11 left in the stanza.
MT stayed in control while stretching the lead to as much as 17, 29-12. UTEP was able to cut the deficit to single digits, 32-24, with a 12-3 run before going into the locker room.
