MT Falls 70-65 at Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss rallied from a nine-point deficit with less than seven minutes remaining to force overtime and then dealt Middle Tennessee a 70-65 setback in front of 1,277 at Reed Green Coliseum Thursday.
Middle Tennessee (14-6, 8-2) maintained a share of first place in C-USA despite the setback, which also ended the squad's five-game win streak. Southern Miss (14-7, 7-3) completed the season sweep of Middle Tennessee and is the only conference team to defeat the Blue Raiders since they joined C-USA.
Southern Miss also rallied from a second-half deficit and defeated Middle Tennessee in overtime in Murfreesboro earlier this season. The Golden Eagles improved to 4-0 in overtime games this season.
Senior forward Cheyenne Parker led Middle Tennessee with another strong outing in the paint. Parker recorded her C-USA leading 11th double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Parker also blocked four shots. She fouled out early in overtime.
Olivia Jones was held to 11 points on 4-of-21 shooting from the field. Jones, C-USA's leading scorer at 21.7 points per game, was held to 10 points below her season average. Jones did have four steals to add to her league-leading total.
Senior captain Shanice Cason had her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds matched her career high. Cason also had four assists and two steals. Cason also earned her 100th career start against Southern Miss, which is tied for 10th on the career games started list.
Ty Petty and Caya Wlliams each scored seven for Middle Tennessee. Petty also had five assists.
Tamara Jones and Jerontay Clemons each had double-doubles for Southern Miss. Jones had 22 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Clemons finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was close throughout but Middle Tennessee maintained a slim lead for the majority of the game. The Blue Raiders led for 28:11 of the 45 minutes and appeared to have things going their way when Parker nailed a short jumper to provide a 47-38 lead with 6:44 remaining in regulation.
Southern Miss clamped down on defense and Middle Tennessee had some crucial missed assignments down the stretch as the Lady Eagles used a 18-9 run to finish the second half and force overtime.
Clemons' jumper with 14 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game, 56-56.
Middle Tennessee had three chances to win the game in regulation. Jones missed from short range with five seconds remaining. Parker collected the offensive rebound but couldn't finish the putback; however, the Blue Raiders maintained possession when the ball went out of bounds with 1.7 seconds remaining. They got the ball to Jones in the paint but her shot rimmed out as the teams went to overtime.
Southern Miss scored first in overtime and maintained its edge throughout the extra period.
Middle Tennessee was able to get to the free-throw line 28 times; however, it was 12-of-28 from the line for 42.9 percent. That, coupled with a 36.5 percent effort from the field (23-for-63), proved costly in the tightly-contested game.
Middle Tennessee will look to salvage a split on the road trip when it faces Louisiana Tech Saturday. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
