MT Remains Tied For First in C-USA
RUSTON, La. – Middle Tennessee bounced back from its first conference road loss of the season with a commanding 68-44 win against Louisiana Tech here Saturday.
The Blue Raiders (15-6, 9-2) racked up their eighth road win of the season and maintained a share of the C-USA lead behind a career night from senior forward Cheyenne Parker, who produced her conference-leading 12th double-double in 18 games.
Parker scored a career-high 34 points and pulled 17 rebounds – one off her career high – to lead the Blue Raiders. Parker also led the team in blocks (5) and tied for the team-lead in assists with four. The five blocks pushed Parker's total to 76 and moved her into second on the single-season list, just two behind Kay Willbanks for the top spot. She also moved into ninth on the career blocks list.
"This was a big win and one we really needed," Parker said. "We were focused. We had that tough loss at Southern Miss and it was crucial to bounce back in a good way."
Parker was the only Blue Raider in double figures but several Middle Tennessee players came up huge as the squad secured the season sweep of the Louisiana Tech (11-11, 6-5). Olivia Jones scored seven points, pulled 11 rebounds and had four steals. It marked the first game this season where Jones did not score double figures.
Shanice Cason finished with seven points and four rebounds. Ty Petty netted six points, four assists and five steals, Brea Edwards finished with five points and Caroline Warden, Abbey Sissom and China Dow added three each.
The Blue Raider defense was outstanding. Middle Tennessee held the Lady Techsters to their lowest scoring total of the season and limited them to 15-of-60 shooting from the field for 25 percent.
"We played better but we still need to improve in some areas," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "It was good to bounce back and get this win but we still have to maintain our focus and continue to get better."
The Blue Raiders forced 18 turnovers and scored 23 points off of them. They also scored 14 second-chance points as they collected 15 offensive rebounds. Parker, who leads the nation in offensive rebounds, pulled seven.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it faces Rice at Murphy Center Thursday at 7 p.m.
