MT uses career and season highs to take down Rice in exciting five sets
HOUSTON – Middle Tennessee (5-16, 3-4) used a season high 30 kills from Chelsea Ross and career highs from Ashton Peck and Delaney Taylor to defeat the Rice Owls (13-6, 3-2) 3-2 on Sunday at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Taylor picked up a career high 62 assists in the five set match while Peck held together the back row with 20 digs. Ross also picked up a career high six blocks to lead the team in the category with LaVondria Covington who also had six which matched her career high.
Covington also reached a career high in kills with 10 while hitting .615 and Rachel Shaughnessy hit a career high .692 with nine kills.
The first frame was one of changing momentum. Rice took a 3-1 lead early but MT was able to battle back to take a 9-7 lead of their own. From there the Owls took nine of the next 12 points and led 16-12. Miri Shade hit .833 for the set on 5-6, but it was not enough as Noelle Whitlock almost matched her with 6-8 for a .750 hitting percentage. The Raiders battled back to reach 20 points, but Rice took the first frame 25-20 for a 1-0 match lead.
Middle Tennessee made some adjustments during the break and came out on fire in set two. After being tied 4-4, the Raiders went on an 11-4 run to open a 15-9 lead. Ross earned three kills in the last five points for MT including the final one of the frame to lead her team to a 25-20 second set win to even the match 1-1.
The Raiders and Owls fought hard for match control in the third frame as neither team led by more than three until late in the set. Ross had an amazing 10 kills for the frame and MT used a 7-3 run late to open up their advantage. The Raiders won their second set in a row 25-20 and took their first match lead in two outings 2-1.
Rice began the fourth set on a mission as leapt out to an early lead. But MT showed their resiliency once again as, down 13-8, they put together a 9-3 run to take the lead 17-16. From that point the frame stayed close as neither team was able to earn much breathing room. The Raiders earned the first set point as a match point at 24-23, but the Owls were able to fend off three straight match points and eventually took the frame 29-27 to force a fifth and deciding set.
Middle Tennessee opened the fifth and deciding set on a 5-0 run. After a Rice timeout, the Owls rattled off four of their own to cut the lead to 5-4. The Raiders got their feet under them again as they scored five of the next seven points to take a 10-6 lead before Rice came back to tie the frame 11-11. The remainder of the set was close as it ended with seven ties with Rice fighting off four match points. In the end the Raiders took the frame 17-19 to finish of the Owls 3-2 to earn their fifth win of the season.
The Blue Raiders will get some much needed time off as they don't play again until Sunday when they take on the Florida Atlantic Owls. It will MT's Dig Pink game for Breast Cancer Awareness. The match will begin at 1pm in Alumni Memorial Gym.
