Raiders drop three setter to Owls
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (5-17, 3-5) seemingly had no answers for Florida Atlantic (14-6, 6-2) as they dropped the match 3-0 to the Owls at Alumni Memorial Gym.
Florida Atlantic proved why they are ranked highly in Conference USA in offense as they outhit the Raiders .422-.154. Maja Ristic led all scorers with 17 kills and hit .419 which should keep her in the top 10 in C-USA in kills per set.
Gabriella Martin stayed hot as the conference's best hitter hit .462 with seven kills. The Owls also out-blocked MT 16-11 as Abbie Reid and Brittney Brown were solid on the front row. Reid and Brown and six and five blocks respectively as the Raiders were not able to find many holes in the Florida Atlantic defense.
Chelsea Ross led the Raiders with 13 kills, while defending C-USA Setter of the Week Delaney Taylor led the raiders in hitting with a career high .750 hitting percentage. Taylor also tied for the most assists in the match with 25 while Jacqueline Lux returned to action with nine digs to lead the match. LaVondria Covington had another good match as she hit .300 with four kills and led MT with four blocks.
The Blue Raiders opened the match well, but with the first frame tied 2-2, Florida Atlantic went on a 10-4 run to take control at 12-6. Ristic earned four of her 17 kills in the set and Reid hit 1.000 with four kills of her own to lead the Owls. Florida Atlantic took the first frame 25-15 for a 1-0 match lead.
Middle Tennessee surrendered the first point of set two, but battled back to take leads of 2-1 and 3-2. The frame remained close through the first 16 points as the Owls were only able to manage a 9-7 lead. But another 10-4 run gave Florida Atlantic a commanding 19-11 lead as Ristic earned another five kills in the frame. Taylor had a good set as she hit 1.000 with three kills, but as a team the Raiders shot just .062 and were not able to hold off the Owls as they took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 second set win.
Once again the Raiders were able to get an early lead in the third with a 2-1 advantage. After the Owls used a 7-2 run to take an 8-4 lead, MT fought back to tie the set 10-10. Another 7-2 Florida Atlantic run gave the Owls a 17-12 lead before the Raiders were able to cut it back to three at 21-18.
