Raiders drop second straight to Herd
HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Middle Tennessee (5-18, 3-6) dropped another four set match Wednesday as they lost to Marshall (15-8, 6-4) 3-1 at the Cam Henderson Center.
Chelsea Ross and the Herd's Cassie Weaver led all scorers with 22 kills for the match. Ally Kiekover was second for Marshall in the category with 18 and Miri Shade had another nice night for MT with 13 kills. Delaney Taylor earned 43 assists, the most of the match, as LaVondria Covington earned four blocks on the night.
Marshall was red hot to begin the match as they took a 7-1 lead to open the first frame. After a couple Blue Raider timeouts, MT settled in to a nice rhythm. Ross earned five kills and hit .300 while Rachel Shaughnessy picked up three kills and hit a whopping .750. In fact the Raiders finished the set with a 19-18 advantage, but Weaver's eight kills and the early run were too much and the Herd took set one 25-20 for a 1-0 match lead.
The second set was much tighter throughout as neither gained control until late. Ross again had five kills for Middle Tennessee as Weaver continued her good play as well with six of her own. Taylor had 12 assists in the frame to lead the Raiders and the team picked up two more blocks as well. The Raiders finally gained control as they won five of the last seven points to win 25-21 and even the match 1-1.
Middle Tennessee took control early in the third frame as a 5-1 run gave them a 9-6 lead. The Raiders lead reached four at 15-11, and five at 20-15. But a 10-3 Herd run perpetuated by four Ally Kiekover kills and five Blue Raider service errors gave Marshall a 25-23 third set victory and a 2-1 match lead.
The fourth frame was tight again as it saw 10 ties and two lead changes. The Herd finally took control late in the set, however. Tied 12-12 Marshall put together a 4-1 run to take a 16-13 lead. From there MT tied it again at 16-16, but another 3-0 run by the Herd gave them a 19-16 lead they would not relinquish. They closed the set impressively again, earning nine of the final 15 points to take the frame 9-6 for a 3-1 match win.
The Raiders will travel home for a much anticipated rematch with the Rice Owls on Friday. MT beat the Owls 3-2 in Houston just 10 days ago. Middle Tennessee will be looking to get back on the winning track at 7 p.m. Friday at Alumni Memorial Gym.
