Raiders lose to Owls in three, drop third straight
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (5-19, 3-7) dropped their third match in a row, this time to Rice (16-7, 6-3) 3-0 at Alumni Memorial Gym Friday.
The Owls exacted their revenge on MT as the Raiders defeated Rice in Houston earlier this season. Chelsea Ross led all scorers with 15 kills, but hit just .128 as Middle Tennessee managed to hit just .098 as a team. Leah Mikesky led Rice with 11 kills, but she too hit under .200 at .176 with only eight digs on the night.
Delaney Taylor led the Raiders with 29 assists and Ross led the team with 15 digs while Libero Jacqueline Lux chipped in 12.
Rice took the first lead of the match with the first point of the match, but MT held close until the Owls scored four straight points to take a 6-2 lead. The Raiders eventually strung together a 5-1 run of their own midway through the frame and took the lead 16-15. The lead was short lived, however, as Rice rattled off five points in a row to take a 20-16 lead and never looked back. The Owls took the first frame 25-20 and led the match 1-0.
The girls from Houston started well in the second set as well, taking the first five points and shooting out to a 7-2 lead. The advantage grew to as much as seven at 14-7, but the Raiders did not quit. They went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 16-13, then later in the frame earned a 7-1 run to cut the lead to two at 23-21. Rice was able to close out the final two points and took a 2-0 match advantage with a 25-21 second set win.
Middle Tennessee began the third frame well as they had leads of 3-2 and 4-3. The set was close throughout as the teams traded points until late in the frame. The Owls, though, were able to catch a hot streak again as they closed the match on a 7-2 run and took the lead from 18-17 to a 25-19 set win. Rice's third set win gave them the match 3-0.
The Raiders will be back in action Sunday as they host FIU at 1 p.m. in Alumni Memorial Gym. The Panthers defeated Florida Atlantic tonight on the road 3-2 and are currently eyeing a Conference USA Tournament bid as they were tied for fourth place in the conference entering play tonight.
