Raiders keep pace in C-USA race as Peck earns 750th win
RUSTON, LA. – Middle Tennessee (7-19, 5-7) dominated LA Tech (9-16, 2-9) Friday 3-0 in Ruston, La. The win, coupled with a Marshall loss and the fact that Charlotte did not play, means the Raiders are now one game out of the Conference USA Tournament and in sole possession of ninth place.
MT's seventh win of the season is also the 750th career win for head coach Matt Peck. A career that has spanned nearly 32 seasons has been a good one for the coach. First at Wayne State, then to North Alabama and now at MT, Peck has led his teams to 22 20-win seasons, 10 30-win campaigns and 2 40-win records. He guided North Alabama to a handful of Elite Eight appearances and a Division II National Title while taking the Raiders to a Sweet 16 in 2007.
"It doesn't seem that long ago that I had my first win at Wayne State," Peck said after the match. "I'm really enjoying this season even though it hasn't been one of our best. But it's really rewarding when this team plays the way they did tonight. And I'm looking forward to 250 more wins."
Chelsea Ross led all scorers with 15 kills as Rachel Shaughnessy led the match with a .556 hitting percentage. Makila York came on strong as she hit a career high .545 with seven kills, Delaney Taylor earned another 31 assists, and Jacqueline Lux picked up 17 digs along the back row. The Raiders also hit .283 as a team while holding LA Tech to just .009.
MT dominated the first frame start to finish. Ross led the match with five kills in the set as Miri Shade and York each had three. York and Shaughnessy each hit .400 in frame one as the Raiders outhit LA Tech .206-.000 for the set. Delaney Taylor had 10 of MT's 13 assists as the offense played well and defeated the Lady Techsters 25-16 for a 1-0 match lead.
Set two was more of the same. MT began a little slower as it took them seven points to reach five of their own with an early 5-2 lead. Up just 9-7 early in the frame, the Raiders used an 11-6 run to open a 20-13 lead to assert themselves in the match. Ross and Shade each earned four kills in the set and York added three more. The Raiders upped their hitting percentage for the match, hitting .345 in set two and holding LA Tech to just .025 in the frame. MT's 25-18 set win gave them control of the match up 2-0.
The third frame was a little more difficult for MT. Ross came up big again as she earned 6 kills in the set, but the Raiders only led by two midway through 8-6. A 5-2 run gave them a 13-8 lead, then another 5-2 run later increased the lead to 18-11. The Lady Techsters stayed tough as they cut the lead to 20-15, but MT finished the match on a 5-1 run. They won the set 25-16 and took the match 3-0.
Middle Tennessee will look to pull into a tie for eighth place in the conference as they travel to Birmingham to take on UAB Sunday at 1 p.m. The Blazers earned their first C-USA win of the season Friday with a five set win over Marshall.
