MT takes down Blazers in 3-0 sweep
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Middle Tennessee (8-19, 6-7) took down UAB (9-19, 1-12) in a 3-0 sweep Sunday at Bartow Arena. The win marks the first three-match winning streak for the Raiders on the season and helps them keep pace in the Conference USA race, including gaining a half game on the idle Marshall Thundering Herd.
"I'm so proud of this team," Head coach Matt Peck said afterwards. "We seem to be peaking at the right time. We are showing a ton of fight, and for a team starting four freshman that's huge."
Peck went on to say "This is quickly becoming one of my favorite teams because of how they have matured over the season. We need a huge crowd Friday for Charlotte!"
Chelsea Ross led all scorers again with 16 kills and hit a very good .324 for the match. She outplayed Gabby Deshotel of UAB, as Deshotel had to have a good third set to come away with seven kills to lead UAB. Miri Shade picked up nine kills, LaVondria Covington earned six, and Makila York led MT with a .400 hitting percentage on five kills. Rachel Shaughnessy also helped the good play from the front row as she hit .375 with five kills of her own.
Jacqueline Lux had another good match from the back row as she had 21 digs and Delaney Taylor earned 33 of the Raiders 39 assists.
UAB took the first advantage in frame one as they took a 3-0 lead. But the Raiders came back quickly scoring seven of the next eight points for a 7-4 lead. From there they increased their advantage to 9-5 and never really looked back. Ross led all scorers with six kills and the service tables were turned in MT's favor as well. The Blue Raiders have had trouble serving at times this season but MT earned three service aces and had no errors while UAB had no aces but five service errors.
The Raiders took the first point of set two, but it took a few points to get into a rhythm. Up 5-4, they rattled off five straight points, then later in the frame earned another 6-3 run to take a 16-10 lead. The Blazers fought back, however, as they used a 9-2 run to take a 19-18 lead. But MT settled down and put together a 7-2 run to close the set. They took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-21 set two win.
Middle Tennessee blazed to a 7-2 start in set three. UAB did not role over though as they used three straight points to cut the lead to 7-5. After the team's traded side outs, the Raiders put together an 8-3 run to extend the lead to 18-12. The Blazers cut the lead back to four, but MT closed the match on a 6-2 run for a 25-17 set win and a 3-0 match sweep.
Middle Tennessee will be back home on Friday as they play Charlotte in a key Conference USA match. The match starts at 7 p.m. and each team is competing with Marshall, Florida Atlantic and Southern Miss for the final spots in the C-USA Tournament.
