Raiders battle with 49ers for final spots in C-USA Tourney
MURFREESBORO – As the season begins to wind down, Middle Tennessee (8-19, 6-7) will host Charlotte (7-16, 4-8) Friday at 7 p.m. in Alumni Memorial Gym.
The 49ers come into action 1.5 games behind the Blue Raiders, and two full games behind Marshall for the eighth and final spot in the Conference USA Tournament that begins November 20 in San Antonio. Charlotte has won two of their last three matches, including a 3-0 sweep of North Texas. But they dropped their last match 3-0 to LA Tech, a team MT swept 3-0 last Friday.
Britney Leigh Held leads the 49ers in assists and her 9.65 assists per set average places her fourth in C-USA. The front row has been paced this season by Anna Henderson, who is sixth in the conference with 1.06 blocks per set. Once again the Raiders will have to face a formidable serving foe, as Shelby Green has 0.37 service aces per set, good enough for third in C-USA. Green has also been stellar on the back row this season as her 4.18 digs per set rank her seventh in the conference, just two places behind MT's Jacqueline Lux.
Middle Tennessee is coming into the match with everything still to play for as far as the conference race is concerned. They defeated LA Tech last Friday and then handled UAB on Sunday, both matches on the road and neither match saw them drop a frame.
Lux had a great week in blue and white, as she led the Raiders in digs in both matches over the weekend. Her 6.33 digs per set were impressive enough to win her C-USA Defensive Player of the Week. It's the sophomore's first conference superlative award of her career and the third for MT this season.
The Raiders are currently just a half game behind Marshall for the final spot in the C-USA Tournament. With two weeks left in the season, there are a plethora of ways for MT to grab the final spot from the Herd. Matches against Charlotte, North Texas and Marshall to finish out the season mean the Raiders still have control of their own destiny. The Herd host Southern Miss and Rice this weekend before traveling to WKU and Murfreesboro to close out their campaign next week.
