Raiders lose match 3-2 to 49ers
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (8-20, 6-8) dropped a heart-breaker to Charlotte (8-16, 5-8) 3-2 in Alumni Memorial Gym Friday.
Chelsea Ross led all scorers again with 19 kills as Miri Shade added 14 more. Rachel Shaughnessy was nearly perfect as she hit .778 with eight kills on nine attempts. The 49ers were unable to dig any of Shaughnessy's shots as the only non-kill was an error late in the match. LaVondria Covington also hit well at .444 with six kills and two errors on nine attempts.
The Raiders had trouble with Charlotte's block at times during the night, but a great fourth set helped MT out-block the 49ers 20-18 for the match. Covington led the Raiders with six total blocks as Delaney Taylor added five more. Taylor also had a superb night in the setter role as earned 48 assists and picked up three kills.
Middle Tennessee's back row evened out the dig party as Ross had a match-high 13. But Shade, Ashton Peck and defending Defensive Player of the Week Jacqueline Lux each earned nine digs.
The first set started slow for MT, but eventually the Raiders took a 7-4 lead. Charlotte earned a 5-1 run midway through to take a 12-11 advantage, but MT came right back to take a 16-14 lead with a 5-2 spurt. After four straight points by the 49ers the Raiders came back to tie it at 20-20. Charlotte took the next two points, but MT closed on a 5-0 run to take the first frame 25-22.
Set two was very different for the Raiders. Charlotte took an early 9-2 advantage and never really looked back. MT cut the lead to 12-6, but the 49ers rattled off eight of the next nine points to lead 20-8. The Raiders were able to cut into the lead some, but ultimately Charlotte evened the match 1-1 with a 25-14 second frame win.
The 49ers earned a 5-2 advantage to begin the third and were able to keep that gap for most of the frame. MT was able to cut the lead to 12-10 and 14-12, but did not get any closer as Charlotte used four kills and a .500 hitting percentage from Abreia Epps to take a 25-20 set three win and a 2-1 match advantage.
Middle Tennessee was ready to play the fourth frame as they earned a quick 6-3 advantage. After Charlotte took a 7-6 lead, the team's traded two side outs. Then the Raiders went on a passion filled, crowd induced 15-4 run to take a 23-13 lead. Ross led the way with five kills, Shade added four more, and Taylor picked up all 11 of the team's assists. The Raiders block finally became a factor as they out blocked Charlotte 10-2 and earned half of their blocks for the night in the single frame. Even with a quick 4-0 49er run, MT was still able to hold on 25-18.
The Raiders stumbled out of the blocks in set five as Charlotte took a 9-3 lead early on. MT earned three points in a row to cut the lead to 9-6, but the 49ers followed with a 4-1 run to push the lead out to 13-7. MT did close with a 5-1 advantage, saving three match points in the process, to cut the lead to 14-12. But Charlotte was able to finish the Raiders 15-12 in the final frame for a 3-2 match win.
Middle Tennessee will be the only Conference USA team that will not play Sunday. The Raiders will be hoping for another Marshall loss as they host Rice to close out the weekend. With the Herd's loss to Southern Miss, and Charlotte's win in Murfreesboro, there is now only one game separating those two and MT for the eighth and final spot in the C-USA Tournament. The Raiders' next match will be Thursday at North Texas against Carnae Dillard and the Mean Green.
