MT loses to Mean Green but stays alive in C-USA race
DENTON, TEXAS – Middle Tennessee (8-21, 6-9) started slow, but were able to rally and play well in their 3-1 loss to North Texas (18-12, 10-5) Thursday.
Down 2-0 in the match and with little momentum, MT made a key intermission adjustment. They moved Jacqueline Lux, normally the Libero for the Raiders, into the setter role. It gave the Raiders a huge shot of energy and pushed them to a third set win and nearly forced a fifth frame for the match.
Carnae Dillard did have a match high 21 kills, but Middle Tennessee's Texas native Miri Shade earned a Raider high 15 and had a great last two frames. Chelsea Ross also chipped in 14 kills and 12 digs for another double-double on the season and Lux earned a career high 22 assists in her new role. Ashton Peck nearly matched a career high as she picked up 15 digs as she was MT's Libero for the match.
North Texas took the first two points of the match before MT tied it 2-2. The Raiders eventually took the lead as high as 5-3, and also led 6-5 and 7-6. But a 9-2 run for the Mean Green gave them control of the frame 15-9. The Raiders hung tough, but eventually North Texas took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-18 first frame win. Chelsea Ross led all scorers with six kills as she out performed Carnae Dillard 6-5 in the first set.
The Mean Green took a quick 4-1 lead in set two. But MT showed more resiliency as they used a 5-2 run midway through the frame to close the gap to 16-13. North Texas, however, found their stride again as they finished the set on a 9-1 sprint to beat the Raiders 25-14 and earn a 2-0 match lead.
Middle Tennessee made one of the bigger changes of the season heading into set three as they moved Jacqueline Lux, normally the Libero, to setter for the frame. It gave the Blue Raiders some new energy and helped them stay tough through the third set. As MT led 16-15, North Texas won three straight points to take a late 18-16 lead. But the Raiders came back with four of five of their own to take another 22-21 lead. With match-point for the Mean Green up 24-23, MT rattled off three straight points to take the set 26-24 and stay in the match, down 2-1.
The Blue Raiders looked determined in the fourth set. They took a 5-4 lead on the back of a 4-1 run early in the frame. Later on they scored seven of nine for a 13-8 lead. The lead increased to six twice at 19-13 and 21-15. But MT had trouble finishing again as North Texas ended the frame on an 11-3 run to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.
Middle Tennessee will travel home to take on Marshall Saturday at 4 p.m. It will be Senior Day, so it will be the last opportunity for fans to see Bridget Keller, Rachel Shaughnessy and Chelsea Ross. Also, with Marshall losing to WKU and Charlotte losing to Florida Atlantic, the final spot in the Conference USA Tournament will be won in Alumni Memorial Gym in Murfreesboro.
