MT scores 24-17 victory at FAU
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Record–setting offensive superlatives and a remarkable defensive stand following a rare taunting play that took points off of the board keyed Middle Tennessee's 24-17 road win against Florida Atlantic Saturday.
Middle Tennessee (5-5, 3-3) overcame a driving rain throughout the game to pile up 479 yards total offense, while coming up with big defensive stops to limit the Owls (2-8, 2-5) to 297 yards total offense.
Quarterback Brent Stockstill accounted for all three of Middle Tennessee's touchdowns. He was 18-of-32 for 301 yards through the air, including touchdown passes of 69- and 62-yards to standout freshman receiver Richie James. Stockstill also rushed for a 13-yard touchdown.
James also had a remarkable game with nine receptions for 198 yards and the two touchdown receptions. The 198 yards are third on the single-game list.
The game was back-and-forth throughout until Middle Tennessee took the lead for good in record-setting fashion when the dynamic freshman duo of Stockstill and James connected for the second time in the game. Stockstill's 62-yard touchdown pass to James provided the Blue Raiders with a 24-17 lead with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter.
Not only did the score provide the lead, but it also resulted in benchmarks for two of the nation's top freshmen. The touchdown was Stockstill's 23rd of the season and tied him with Dwight Dasher (2009) for the single-season record. It also put Stockstill over 3,000 yards to make him the only signal-caller in program history to achieve the feat.
James also continued his remarkable breakout year. The 62-yard touchdown put him over 1,000 yards for the season, joining Kerry Wright as the only receivers in program history to achieve the standard. James also broke the single-season receptions mark against FAU. He now has 82 for the season. He broke the previous mark of 76 by Wright (2004).
FAU appeared to have tied the game when quarterback Jaquez Johnson connected with Jenson Stoshak for a 70-yard touchdown on a flea flicker; however, Stoshak was whistled for taunting before he reached the end zone.
The touchdown was wiped off and the ball moved back to the 25. Middle Tennessee also was called for a personal foul on the play and penalized 15 yards to move the ball to the Blue Raider 10. The Owls ran seven plays from the 10 or closer and did not score as the Middle Tennessee defense rose to the occasion.
The first three plays were incomplete passes for the Owls, but Middle Tennessee was called for a late hit on the quarterback to give Florida Atlantic a fresh set of downs at the 5. Big stops from Quay Watt, Xavier Walker, T.T. Barber and Cavelis Luckett set up a fourth-and-goal from the 3. Johnson fumbled on the play and the Blue Raiders had the defensive stand and took over on downs.
Florida Atlantic had one last chance and moved to the Blue Raider 18 but another big stand prevents the Owls' comeback attempt. Luckett led the Blue Raider defense with 10 tackles, while Barber added nine. Jamarcus Howard started in place of injured Jeremy Cutrer and came up with five tackles and one interception.
Florida Atlantic struck first after a Blue Raider fumble was converted into seven points; however, Middle Tennessee came right back in rapid fashion.
Stockstill zeroed in on James, who hauled in a perfectly-thrown pass down the middle of the field to beat the Owls secondary for a 69-yard touchdown strike. Cody Clark's point after enabled the Blue Raiders to tie the game, 7-7, with 7:43 remaining in the first quarter. The drive covered 90 yards and was the longest of the season.
James had secured his fourth game of 100 yards or more by the end of the first quarter with five receptions for 101 yards.
The Blue Raiders added to their lead just before the end of the first quarter when junior kicker Cody Clark nailed a 24-yard field goal to push the advantage to 10-7 with four seconds remaining. It was Clark's 30th career field goal to tie him with former standout Colby Smith for seventh on the all-time list.
Florida Atlantic regained the lead, 14-10, early in the second quarter but Middle Tennessee scored just before halftime to move back in front. Stockstill accounted for his second touchdown of the first half when he tucked the ball and scrambled 13 yards, weaving in and out of traffic, and then cutting left and into the end zone for the longest rush of his career. Clark's point after pushed the lead to 17-14 with 1:54 remaining before halftime.
