MT Drops Season Opener, 76-65

Upshaw Paced MT with 18 points
MURRAY, Ky. – Reggie Upshaw scored 16 points and Giddy Potts added 15, but the Middle Tennessee basketball team dropped its opening game at Murray State, 76-65, on Tuesday night.
Upshaw did most of his damage in the second half, netting 10 on 4-of-5 shooting in the second period. Potts, meanwhile, led MT in the opening stanza with nine points.
Upshaw also hauled in eight rebounds, helping the Blue Raiders (0-1) win the battle of the boards, 37-35.
Senior Perrin Buford had a fine performance, too, and finished one point shy of his first career double-double (nine points, 10 rebounds).
Potts got hot right from the tip, nailing MT's first basket with a long-range three. He also had it working in transition, and a fast-break layup gave the Blue Raiders their largest lead of the game at five, 14-9, with just over 13 minutes to play in the first half.
The Racers responded to Potts' outburst with a barrage of three-pointers. MSU's Jeffery Moss drained the first to cut the MT lead to just two and Bryce Jones nailed another to put the Racers on top, 29-22, with five minutes to go before halftime.
Buford scored two of his eight first half points by rolling in a layup later in the period to cut the MSU cushion down to three, but the Racers used an 8-4 run to head into the locker room ahead, 37-30.
Joshua Phillips and Potts provided some highlights to begin the second stanza as Phillips recorded his only basket of the game with an alley-oop slam off of an inbound pass and Potts broke away for a one-handed tomahawk. The dunks put MT behind by four, 41-37, with 16:16 to go, but another triple from Moss quickly closed the door.
The Racers (2-0) led by as many as 14 in the second half and the Blue Raiders got it back down to four when Upshaw converted from in-close to make it 61-57, but Murray State was able to pull away and ice the game thanks to strong free throw shooting down the stretch.
Middle Tennessee held Murray State to just a 46 percent clip from the field, but the Racers made 16-of-20 from the charity stripe (80 percent).
The Blue Raiders will next take the court on Nov. 21 at Tennessee State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
