MURFREESBORO – For the second straight season, the Middle Tennessee soccer team enters the C-USA Championship as the No. 5 seed. The Blue Raiders will begin their postseason run against Rice at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 on the campus of FIU.
MT went 1-0-1 during the final weekend of the regular season, notching a 2-1 win at UTEP on Friday and a 1-1 tie at Old Dominion yesterday. The results brought the team's record to 9-5-4 on the year, 5-2-3 in C-USA play.
Morgan Mauck paced the Blue Raiders with one goal in each of the two games and the freshman has recorded eight points in her 10 starts on the year.
Tori Hawkins notched the other score at UTEP, adding to her impressive run. The senior had zero goals coming into the team's game against WKU and has since scored four in the last seven contests.
Rice enters the C-USA Championship sporting a 10-6-2 overall record and a 6-3-1 mark in conference. The Owls are fresh off of a 4-0 victory over UTSA on Oct. 29.
Rice is ranked first in the league in goals per game (1.83) but sits at eighth in goals against average (1.28).
Striker Lauren Hughes has done most of the damage for the Owls and she has the fourth-most points in C-USA with 24.
Should MT defeat Rice, the Blue Raiders would play either No. 1 North Texas or No. 8 WKU on Friday at 3:30 p.m. A win there, would put MT in the Championship Game on Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. on the Fox Sports Network.
Blue Raider Bullets:
· MT earned a spot in the C-USA Tournament for the second time in school history, finishing with 18 points and the No. 5 seed. Last season, the Blue Raiders were also the No. 5 seed and knocked off Charlotte, 2-1, in OT before falling to No. 1 North Texas, 1-0.
· Middle Tennessee enters the C-USA Tournament having played in a school-record four straight 2OT games. The Blue Raiders were 1-0-3 in those games.
· The last time that MT won more than one match in a conference tournament was when the team won three en route to the 2010 Sun Belt Championship.
· Middle Tennessee could give up the fewest amount of goals in a season in school history. MT has only allowed 15 scores in 18 matches. The record for fewest goals given up is 19 in 2013.
· MT notched nine shutouts in the regular season which tied the school's best mark. The Blue Raiders also had nine clean sheets in 2003 and 2011.
· Middle Tennessee is averaging 1.0 goal per game this season which is tied with the 2014 team for the lowest goals per game output of the Rhoden era.
· Middle Tennessee has scored the 11th fewest goals in C-USA this season (18), but is tied for third in goals allowed (15).
· Kelsey Brouwer on the all-time MT lists: 317 saves (2nd), 32 wins (t-1st), 26 shutouts (1st), 6188:06 minutes played (2nd). With a win this week, she would move past Rebecca Cushing (2009-11) in wins.
· If the season ended today, Brouwer's .870 save percentage would be second-best in school history.
· Seniors Emily Jorgenson (6,641) and Tori Hawkins (6,061) rank third and eighth, respectively, in all-time minutes played for field players.
· 18 players have attempted shots on the year and 16 have had at least one shot on goal.
· Kelsey Brouwer and Emily Jorgenson were named Conference USA Goalkeeper and Defender of the Week, respectively, on Aug. 31.
· Brouwer was named Conference USA Goalkeeper of Week again on Oct. 5.
