Three players provide double doubles
MURFREESBORO – Behind the play of junior guard Ty Petty, MT head coach Rick Insell and the Blue Raiders (1-2) picked up their first win of the season, 84-75, over Ole Miss head coach Matt Insell and the Rebels (1-3) Sunday afternoon in front of 6,605 at the Murphy Center.
Three Blue Raiders registered double-doubles in a single game, but Matt Insell credited one Blue Raider in particular for sparking Middle Tennessee on the court.
"People can say [Olivia] Jones, [Brea] Edwards, whatever they want… but the engine of that team is [Ty] Petty," Matt Insell explained. "If Petty plays well, Middle Tennessee plays well. I think the coaches in C-USA have it all wrong, because the best player in the league is Petty. And tonight, Petty kicked our butt every way it can be kicked."
Petty finished with 12 points (4-of-11 shooting), three rebounds and 10 assists for her first career double-double.
The junior guard's 10 assists also marked a career-high, besting her previous mark of nine set against Ole Miss in last season's WNIT.
"Middle Tennessee won the game tonight because of Ty Petty," continued Matt Insell. "That's why they won the basketball game. She got everybody else shots and she made everybody on her team better, and that's what a point guard is supposed to do."
Senior guard Brea Edwards had another solid performance, picking up her first double-double of the season.
She had a team-high 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-10 from three-point range. Edwards also added 12 rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes.
Junior Olivia Jones was the third Blue Raider to finish with a double-double, tallying 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Jones closed within 12 points of joining the 1,000-point club at Middle Tennessee.
Abbey Sissom added 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting to round out the double-digit scorers for Middle Tennessee. Sissom was a sizzling 3-for-4 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 from the line.
The scoring output from Edwards, Jones, Petty and Sissom was indicated by the Blue Raiders' high 3-point percentage.
MT converted 48.3 percent of its 3-pointers (14-of-29) as they used the long ball to push themselves to the win.
"We shot the ball better from 3-point today," Rick Insell said. "We can shoot the ball. Abbey Sissom, Olivia Jones, Brea Edwards, Ty Petty and everyone on the bench can shoot the ball. We grew up a little bit today."
The Blue Raiders also out rebounded the Rebels by a 47 to 39 margin, including 18 offensive rebounds being brought down by Middle Tennessee.
It was a back-and-forth contest early in the first period for both squads.
MT's Alex Johnson knocked down a layup to even the score at 10-10 at the 5:27 mark in the first stanza.
Ole Miss began to pull away following a basket by Erika Sisk, giving the Rebels a quick 17-11 lead with 3:51 remaining in the first period.
The Blue Raiders closed the gap before the first period concluded after Sissom converted a layup to bring the deficit to 22-20.
After a 3-pointer by Jones gave MT a 23-22 advantage to begin the second period, the Blue Raiders were off and running.
MT utilized three-point shots from Petty, Sissom and Edwards to give the Blue Raiders a 36-27 halftime lead.
Key in turning the game around was Middle Tennessee's smothering second-quarter defense when the Blue Raiders held Ole Miss to five points and turned a 22-20 first-quarter deficit into a nine-point lead at intermission.
The Blue Raiders wound up out-scoring Ole Miss by a 29 to 18 margin in the third period to take a double-digit lead into the fourth, eventually going on to seal the victory.
Middle Tennessee will play in the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev., Friday and Saturday when they will face Alabama and Nevada, respectively.
