MT Advances to Great Alaska Shootout Championship
11/28/2015 2:05:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Darnell Harris led MT with 15 points
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Middle Tennessee men's basketball team overcame a 19-2 second half run to defeat UNC Asheville, 63-61, and earn a spot in Saturday's Great Alaska Shootout Championship Game.
The Blue Raiders survived another close game as they were up by just one point until Darnell Harris hit his third and final three-pointer to give MT the lead for good with 28 seconds to go.
Harris finished with a game-high 15 points and his dagger in the waning seconds was the senior's only basket in the second half.
Harris was one of five Blue Raiders to score in double-figures as Edward Simpson (11), Reggie Upshaw (10), Giddy Potts (10) and Perrin Buford (10) also eclipsed the plateau.
While the offense got its numbers, the defense was the key for the Blue Raiders (3-1); the unit forced 14 turnovers and tuned them into 23 points.
The Blue Raiders came out of the gate firing and jumped out to an 18-6 lead thanks to a 6-of-10 start from the floor including three triples.
MT would not ease up and an alley-oop slam from Upshaw and an old-fashioned three-point by Potts allowed the lead to swell to a staggering 17 with 7:48 left in the first half.
The Blue Raider defense was equally as impressive in the opening 20 minutes and only allowed the Bulldogs to shoot 33 percent during the first period.
The Bulldogs (2-4) did find some life to end the stanza and a late 7-0 run got them within 12 at 37-25 heading into the locker room.
The second half started much like the first as the Blue Raiders hit four shots in a row at one point and Buford's triple with 13 minutes to go put MT firmly in front, 51-32.
From that point, UNC Asheville went on a 19-2 run by limiting MT to a 1-for-8 stretch from the floor. The Bulldogs also hit three threes during the Blue Raider dry spell.
Jaqawn Raymond finally ended the run with a mid-range jumper at the 5:32 mark, but by that point the Bulldogs had trimmed the lead down to four.
The sides traded hoops for the remainder of the half until Harris' big triple with under 30 seconds left gave the Blue Raiders the two-basket cushion they needed to hold on for the victory.
The Blue Raiders will take on Toledo in the championship of the Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. CT.
