Edwards, Johnson combine for 48 points
RENO, Nev. – Middle Tennessee bounced back from an off-shooting night with an outstanding performance from the field on the way to a 90-46 win against Nevada in the Nugget Classic here Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (2-3) shot 54 percent (36-for-67) and were 53 percent (8-of-15) from 3-point range as they started fast and never relented against the Wolf Pack (0-6).
All-Tournament performers Brea Edwards and Alex Johnson combined for 48 of the team's 90 points and shot 18-for-25 from the field. Edwards scored a tournament-best 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Johnson, a heralded freshman, scored a career-best 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting, and she pulled five rebounds. Johnson hit her first nine shots before misfiring on her 10th attempt.
"I was very proud of how the team bounced back today," Head Coach Rick Insell said. "(Johnson) really stepped up in the paint. We talked about having a better post presence and we did that today. We shot the ball well and we did a good job distributing the basketball and getting some pretty good looks."
Ty Petty also had a solid outing with 13 points and eight of the team's 23 assists. Sophomore post players Rebecca Reuter and Gabby Lyon were also solid. Reuter finished with six points and nine rebounds, while Lyon tallied six points and eight rebounds. Olivia Jones only took two shots and scored one points, but she had seven rebounds and four assists.
Middle Tennessee's post players combined for 32 points and shot 15-of-23 from the field. They also led the charge as the Blue Raiders outrebounded Nevada, 52-33.
"It felt great to play well and contribute to the team," Johnson said. "My teammates made some great passes to set me up for some easy shots, and I was able to finish those shots. It was a great team win."
Freshmen Jess Louro (five) and Jordan Majors (two) scored their first collegiate points in the victory.
The Blue Raiders surpassed 80 points for the second time this season, both wins.
Middle Tennessee sprinted out to a 41-21 halftime lead and never looked back on the way to the victory. The Blue Raiders left no doubt in the second half as they stormed out of the locker room and outscored Nevada 31-8 in the 10-minute third period to break the game wide open.
The Blue Raiders will play at Austin Peay Monday. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
