Blue Raiders Beat VCU, 4-3, For 5th Straight Win
RICHMOND, Va. – Middle Tennessee senior Nayara Moraes stared pressure in the face and delivered a gutsy performance to help lead the Blue Raiders to a 4-3 win against VCU here Saturday afternoon.
With the match tied, 3-3, Moraes took the court against VCU's Alejandra de Lasa and delivered a 6-3, 6-3 triumph in the decisive match as the Blue Raiders (8-2) won their fifth straight overall. Moraes improved to 8-0 in singles, which leads C-USA in wins.
It was another strong performance for Middle Tennessee, which continues to improve with each mounting challenge.
The Blue Raiders earned the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Brittany Huxley and Moraes teamed for a 6-2 win against VCU's Cindy Chala and Salome Kvitashvili at No. 2 doubles. That win evened doubles play at 1-1 and the Blue Raider tandem of Giulia Squadrin and Jesse Grace provided the crucial point with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Competition was fierce in singles play as VCU (6-3) was looking to keep its strong momentum alive in the early season.
VCU captured wins at No. 1 and 5 singles to even the score 2-2. MT's Tiffany William fell to Chala, 3-6, 0-6 at No. 1 singles, and Huxley dropped a tough 3-6, 5-7 decision to Ludivine Burguiere at No. 5 singles.
Middle Tennessee regained the lead, 3-2, when Darya Shulzhanok won a dynamic match from Salome Kvitashvili, 7-5, 6-4. Shulzhanok improved to 7-0 on the season in singles play and provided a key point because VCU won at No. 3 to even the match, 3-3.
Squadrin continued her impressive season and took down Berezhnaya, 6-3, 7-6 (3) at No. 4.
That set the stage for Moraes. Because VCU has just five courts the score was 3-3 when Moraes took the court for what proved to be the decisive match.
Moraes continued her outstanding season – and career – with the impressive 6-3, 6-3, victory to provide the winning margin.
Middle Tennessee returns to action when it travels to Starkville, Miss., to face Mississippi State, Feb. 21.
