Edwards, Jones Post Double-Doubles
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Middle Tennessee answered a big road challenge with a resounding 74-48 triumph at Marshall to remain in first place in the C-USA standings here Thursday.
After a 10-hour bus trip and short turn-around with a noon tipoff the Blue Raiders (18-6, 12-2) put together a workmanship like effort against a much-improved Marshall team.
Two Blue Raiders produced double-doubles and Middle Tennessee dominated the boards and put together one of its better defensive games on the way to their fourth-straight win and ninth in 10 games.
Brea Edwards had a career performance with a double-double that included game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds – both career highs. Edwards was 7-of-8 from 3-point range and also had two steals. Her play was complimented by the clutch effort of sophomore standout Olivia Jones, who poured in 22 points and pulled a game-high 12 rebounds. Jones also had two assists and three steals.
"Brea Edwards was outstanding today and it wasn't just the scoring but the rebound," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "When we get 10 rebounds from that '3' spot we are tough. I thought the player of the game was Olivia Jones. She really carried us and put forth a great all-around effort. It was a tough trip at a tough place to play and our young ladies responded."
The Blue Raiders had a team effort in their dominating victory. Ty Petty was outstanding with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Cheyenne Parker finished with seven points and 10 rebounds as the Blue Raiders just missed having three players with double-double performances.
Marshall (14-10, 6-7) fell behind early and never recovered against a strong Middle Tennessee defense that allowed just five first-half field goals and 15 for the game.
Middle Tennessee vaulted to an early 11-2 lead four minutes into the game and Marshall never recovered. In fact, the Herd never had a lead and it marks the 10th time Middle Tennessee has led wire-to-wire this season.
The Blue Raiders pushed the lead to 34-17 at the half and Marshall never was closer than 15 the entire second half.
It was another strong, complete performance for Middle Tennessee.
The Blue Raiders shot 42 percent (25-for-60) but they had an exceptional shooting game beyond the arc. They were 12-for-28 from 3-point range for 43 percent and tied their season high for treys. Middle Tennessee was also dominant on the glass as it won the battle of the boards 51-29. Jones' 12 rebounds paved the way and Edwards and Parker had 10 each.
Middle Tennessee had 20 assists on its 25 field goals with Shanice Cason leading the way with six assists and just one turnover. Petty finished with five helpers and Caroline Warden added three.
Middle Tennessee held Marshall to 32 percent shooting (15-for-47) from the field, including a 3-for-15 effort (20 percent) from 3-point range.
The Blue Raiders scored 17 points off of 15 Marshall turnovers and they had 23 second-chance points off of 17 offensive rebounds.
Rebecca Reuter (5), China Dow (3), Caya Williams (2) and Gabby Lyon (2) also got into the scoring column for the Blue Raiders.
First place in C-USA will be on the line when Middle Tennessee faces rival WKU in Bowling Green, Ky., Saturday. Tipoff is 2 p.m.
