MT Softball Hosts FIU for C-USA Home Opener

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team (10-8, 0-3 C-USA) will open its home slate in Conference USA action against FIU (16-10, 1-2 C-USA) beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m., and the Sunday finale starting at 12 p.m.

About the Blue Raiders
Last Time Out
The Blue Raiders finally capitalized on scoring chances when they capped off a five-run seventh inning to rally for a 6-5 victory over New Mexico State Tuesday while snapping the Aggies' 10-game win streak in the process. Junior Kiarra Freeman and freshman Morgan Harris combined for a 5-for-7 showcase and four
RBIs. Harris hit a game-tying two RBI single just before Freeman brought in the go ahead run with a single.
The Whaley Way
Sophomore Austyn Whaley has a hit in the last four games where she is hitting .384 from the plate (5-for-13) with a pair of RBIs. Whaley has improved her average over the four games by 33 percentage points (.300-.333).
Raiders Ranked Nationally
As of March 9th when the first NCAA rankings came out, freshman Cor'Nisha Birdsong ranked sixth in the nation in stolen bases while junior Carlie Jenkins is 12th in RBIs per game. Jenkins is also in the top 35 in doubles per game (.47), while Birdsong is 30th in runs per game at 1.18.
Getting off to a Better Start
In the first inning this season, the Blue Raiders are being outscored by opponents, 25-10, which is the highest run differential of any inning that MT trails in. However, MT holds a plus-26 advantage(89-63) over the next seven innings the Blue Raiders have played in.
What to Watch For
When leading after the sixth inning, the Blue Raiders have done a good job of holding the lead while boasting a 6-0 mark.
Scouting the Opponent
Scouting FIU (16-10, 1-2 C-USA)
The Preseason C-USA favorites are led by first-year head coach Gator Rebhan after serving as an assistant coach for FIU in 2014. FIU has won four of its previous six contests while most recently avoiding a three-game sweep against Marshall with a 9-1 run-rule victory. Stephanie Texeira leads the team with a .517 average from the plate, which is good for third best in the conference. She's also second in slugging percentage (1.017) and fifth with six home runs. Corinne Jenkins leads the pitching staff with a 3.01 ERA and nine wins while holding opponents to a .259 batting average.
SERIES HISTORY
The Panthers hold a 38-15 advantage in the all-time series while the Panther have 17 of the last 18 contest between the two foes. MT's last victory in the series came in 2012 in nine innings, 2-1.
