BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Middle Tennessee softball team (11-12, 1-7 C-USA) fell in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday to Florida Atlantic (23-7-1, 4-1 C-USA) at FAU Softball Stadium.
MT suffered a 9-0 defeat in five innings of the first game before falling short, 3-1 in the second game of the twinbill.
Game 1: Florida Atlantic – 9 Middle Tennessee – 0 F/5
Florida Atlantic struck early in the first inning and never looked back as it started the contest with three runs in the bottom of the frame after a pair of doubles. The Owls added on six runs in the following inning thanks in part to a grand slam by the Owls' Melissa Martinez.
Martinez did most of the damage for FAU as she tallied two hits and six RBIs.
The Blue Raider offense struggled from the start as they came away with only one hit in the game as freshman Morgan Harris led off the top of the third with a stand-up double.
Junior Kiarra Freeman got on base with a walk before senior Alma Cortez laid down a sacrifice bunt with one out to advance the runners to second and third, but FAU prevented the run from coming home and ending the best chance for MT to score.
Senior Caitlin McClure recorded the loss and fell to 3-3 on the year as she gave up seven runs on seven hits. Sophomore Megan Chocallo came in for a brief stint in 1.2 innings of work while allowing a run on two hits.
Freshman Makenzie Prince came in for her second appearance of the year with an inning of action.
FAU's Kylie Hanson improved to 9-1 for the hosts as she pitched all five innings for the Owls.
Game 2: Florida Atlantic – 3 Middle Tennessee -1
The Blue Raiders limited Florida Atlantic on offense to just three runs in the second game, but four errors aided the Owls' three runs.
MT struck first in the opening frame after Cortez scored from third on a throwing error with senior Samantha Nieves at bat. Freshman Cor'Nisha Birdsong led off the inning with a single and stole second before Cortez reached base with a single to left field. Birdsong came home to score on the hit but was thrown out at home.
After the Owls tied things up in the third inning, they would score a run in the fourth and fifth inning with miscues helping FAU in the fourth and fifth frame.
The Blue Raiders had a chance to tie the game in the sixth when Nieves singled to right field and advancing to third thanks to junior Megan Griffith's double to deep left field with two outs. Junior Randi Cookus came up to the plate with two down, but grounded out to shortstop. MT had one more final at-bat in the seventh but was retired in order, clinching the win for FAU.
Junior Kelci Cheney pitched well in her start despite falling to 6-7 on the year after recording the loss. The Terrell, Texas native pitched all seven innings while allowing three runs (two earned), seven hits and striking out four batters.
Griffith led the offense with two hits and a double while junior Carlie Jenkins, Cortez, Birdsong and Nieves all tallied singles.
Samantha Messer improved to 6-4 on the year for FAU as she put in six innings of work and allowed one run on six hits.
The Blue Raiders will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow as they return to FAU Softball Stadium at 12 p.m.
