MT goes for series win tomorrow
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's experienced pitching lifted the Blue Raiders to a 7-2 series opening victory over Old Dominion in the first Friday night game at Reese Smith Jr. Field this season. MT improved to 14-10 overall and 6-1 in Conference USA to hold on to first place in the league standings.
Game two of the series begins at 3:35 p.m. CT Saturday and will air on American Sports Network, becoming the first regular-season contest broadcast nationally in MT program history.
The 6-1 start is the best in league play under head coach Jim McGuire and best start against conference foes since 2009.
Seniors Johnathan Frebis, Kooper Kessler and Nathan Foriest combined for 13 strikeouts and surrendered only five ODU hits.
Sophomore Kevin Dupree tied his career high with three hits, including his sixth double, as the Blue Raiders put up 13 hits. Jared Allen (2-for-4; 2 RBI), Michael Adkins (2-for-5; 2B, 2R) and Jake Ingold (2-for-2; RBI) also contributed multi-hit efforts.
After a 30 minute rain delay and laborious first inning, Frebis settled down over the next four frames to earn his fourth win. Frebis threw 28 pitches in the first half and escaped a one out, bases-loaded threat with a 4-6-3 double play.
The crafty veteran also worked his way out of bases loaded jam in the fourth and surrendered one earned run on the night on four hits.
Kessler took over in the sixth and continued his recent success out of the bullpen. He allowed one hit over three shutout innings, running his consecutive scoreless innings streak to eight-and-a-third since returning to the lineup. Kessler surrendered four walks, but collected a game-high six strikeouts.
The Monarchs got on the board first with a run in the third, but MT responded with three runs in the bottom half. Dupree led off the inning with a sharp double to left field and scored on Brad Jarreau's grounder to the right side to tie the game.
Dupree has reached base 11 times in 21 at-bats as the leadoff hitter of an inning this season.
Ronnie Jebavy tripled in the next at-bat, plating Jarreau, and later scored on an Allen single to make it 3-1 MT.
Austin Bryant delivered an RBI single in the fifth as the Blue Raiders tacked on two more. Adkins set up another run in the seventh by leading off with a double, and Dupree scored on Allen's sacrifice fly in the eighth to put MT ahead 7-2.
Closer Nathan Foriest retired the side with a pop fly and two strikeouts to end the game.
ODU starter Greg Tomchick (3-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits over four innings.
MT left 10 on base and ODU stranded 13 runners. ODU committed two errors.
