MT opened the tourney with a 3-2 win over ODU, but the Monarchs got revenge two days later with a 2-1 elimination-game victory. MT took two-of-three at home to win the regular season series. Before last season, the only prior meeting was in 2000 during postseason play at the NCAA Regionals. The Blue Raiders came out on top, 6-5. In addition, five previous matchups have been decided by just one run.
THE STORYLINE
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee wraps up a season-long homestand with a three-game series against Old Dominion this weekend. First pitch times are set for 6 p.m. Friday, 3:35 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. Saturday's contest will air nationally on American Sports Network, becoming the first regular season MT baseball game to be broadcast on a national stage in program history.
The Blue Raiders (13-10, 5-1 C-USA) are looking to rebound after a pair of midweek losses to No. 2 Vanderbilt and Lipscomb.
MT led Vandy for seven innings in front of a season-high 2,620 fans at Reese Smith Jr. Field, but couldn't hold off the defending national champs in a 12-7 defeat on Tuesday. A hangover effect was felt Wednesday when the Raiders managed just one run against Bison starter Brady Puckett. Lipscomb used three unearned runs to jump ahead early and took down the Blue Raiders 8-1.
League play has been a different story.
The Blue Raiders enter the third weekend of conference play on top of the C-USA standings. MT took two-of-three from then-ranked No. 19 Florida Atlantic last weekend after sweeping UAB in three games to open league action.
The Blue Raiders are hitting .266 as a team with 14 home runs on the year. Junior Ronnie Jebavy (.375 AVG, 2 HR, 14 RBIs, 13 SB) and sophomore Brad Jarreau (.344 AVG, 10 RBIs, 17 R) lead the way. Senior Jared Allen has a team-high five home runs and 22 RBIs.
MT has posted a team ERA of 4.65, but has a solid 2.33 mark in league games.
Senior LHP Johnathan Frebis (3-2, 3.47 ERA) will start his 51st career game Friday night, giving him sole possession of second place on the MT list for most career starts. Former Blue Raider Chris Norton (1985-88) holds the record with 55 career starts on the mound.
Old Dominion (13-8, 3-3 C-USA) has won 11 of its previous 14 contests, including two wins and a series victory at No. 14 Rice last weekend. The Monarchs are led offensively by senior Taylor Ostrich, who is hitting .382 with one home run and 19 RBIs. ODU's lineup features seven batters hitting over .300 through 21 games.
On the mound, the ODU pitching staff has a team ERA of 4.70 with opponents hitting .280 against.
