Blue Raiders Rally Past USM in MT Shootout

MT takes down Southern Miss 4-1
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis surged past Conference USA foe Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon to close out play in the MT Shootout with a 4-1 victory.
With the win the Blue Raiders seized third place in the tournament and are currently 11-9 on the season.
Ettore Zito and Dima Zymantovich went down 3-0 on the No. 3 doubles court early but stormed back with a vengeance to take the 6-3 win.
The Golden Eagles tied doubles up with a 6-4 victory on the No. 2 court over MT's Yannick Born and Robin Riethmueller.
On the top court in doubles Ben Davis and Victor Hoang were in a battle to get the edge and the doubles point against Wen-Po Tseng and Chao-Yu Huang. The duos traded the lead several times but USM ended up on top with a 7-5 win to clinch the doubles point and the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders fired back in singles action as Hoang pieced together a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mikhail Esipov at the No. 5 and Davis secured a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 to put Middle Tennessee up 2-1.
The rest of singles play was a thrilling battle with all of the matches reaching the third set.
Born landed a 6-2 first set victory at the No. 3 spot but fell 6-1 in the second. Born rallied past the Golden Eagles' Huang to clinch the 7-5 win in the third set.
Zito posted a dominating 6-0 win in the first set on the top court. USM's Tarun Surat managed to take the second set 4-6. The two continued back and forth in the third set before Zito clinched it with a 6-2 win to give the Blue Raiders the 4-1 victory over Southern Miss.
MT will travel to Memphis next weekend to face the Tigers on Friday, April 3rd and VCU on Saturday, April 4th.
