Blue Raiders hunt down Owls on the road
BOCA RATON, Fla. – It was a historical night for Middle Tennessee on many levels as the Blue Raiders clinched the No. 6 seed in the Conference USA Championship with a 77-54 win on the road at Florida Atlantic.
Four-year seniors, Gavin Gibson and Jacquez Rozier tied the program record for most wins for class at MT with the victory as the two grabbed their 95th win with the Blue Raider family.
Head Coach Kermit Davis also inches closer to his 250th win at MT as he sits with 248 wins.
Middle Tennessee led from start to finish and led by as many as 26 points with Jaqawn Raymond and Reggie Upshaw leading the team with 20 points in the game. Raymond's 20 marked a career-high, while Upshaw led the team in rebounds with 11 to grab his seventh double-double of the year.
The Blue Raiders started strong with a 7-0 run to open the game and create momentum. Raymond was unstoppable on the offensive end in the first five minutes, going 4-for-4 with nine points.
Ten minutes into the game the Blue Raiders started an 8-0 run in which FAU was held scoreless for over four minutes as MT took a 25-12 lead.
The Owls would counter that with a 7-0 run of their own with the Blue Raiders scoreless for three minutes, bring FAU within six points.
The half would continue to be a series of back and forth runs as MT managed to squeeze in an 11-0 run before the half concluded to take a 38-21 lead heading into the locker room.
In the first half Raymond registered 14 points, while Upshaw led the team off the glass with six of the team's 20 rebounds.
The Owls got hot six minutes into the second half, going on a 9-0 run in less than a minute span to pull within eight points with the score reading 46-38 in favor of the Blue Raiders.
MT stole the momentum with a Raymond dunk followed by an FAU turnover that Giddy Potts snagged to take it the distance and slam it home to take a 55-35 lead.
The Blue Raiders were solid from then on out as they cleared the bench getting everyone minutes and finishing with a 77-54 win.
Middle Tennessee also made history at the charity stripe as the team went a perfect 18-of-18 at the line; the second time in program history MT went 100 percent. The last time MT went perfect from the free-throw line was December 16, 1988 when Middle Tennessee went 16-of-16.
Five players scored double figures in the night with Raymond and Upshaw with 20, Potts with 12, Rozier with 11 and Perrin Buford with 10; the first time since 2013 that five Blue Raiders finished in double figures.
Middle Tennessee closes the regular season with a 16-15 overall record and a 9-9 C-USA record in the team's second year in the league.
MT will face 11-seed Charlotte (14-17, 7-11 C-USA) in the first round of the C-USA Championship on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. CT. The Blue Raiders beat the 49ers 72-69 at the Murphy Center earlier this year. This will be the Blue Raiders 22nd-straight postseason tournament appearance and second C-USA postseason.
