Blue Raiders fall 4-0 at Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE – Pitching dominated the game between Middle Tennessee and No. 8 Vanderbilt in front of 2,987 at Hawkins Field Tuesday.
Unfortunately, for the Blue Raiders, Vanderbilt starter Ryan Johnson had a career performance against Middle Tennessee as the Commodores (30-12) secured a 4-0 win. Johnson posted a career-high eight innings to earn the victory and snap Middle Tennessee's six-game winning streak.
Middle Tennessee (23-17) countered with starter Garrett Ring and relievers Blake Stansberry, Heath Slatton and Nathan Foriest, who combined to scatter nine hits, struck out seven and walked five.
Ring went four innings, scattered six hits, struck out three and allowed two runs, both earned, in his four-inning stint before giving way to Stansberry, who allowed one hit in his 1-2/3 innings. Slatton followed with 1-1/3 innings of perfect relief. Foriest closed and was hit for two runs in his only inning of work.
Kevin Dupree was 1-for-3 with a double and had the team's only extra-base hit. Brad Jarreau, Dustin Delgado, Austin Bryant and Will Schnure also had base hits for the Blue Raiders.
Vanderbilt broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Zander Wiel's two-out double plated Rhett Wiseman, who had drawn a one-out walk, to put the Commodores on top 1-0.
Vanderbilt pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fourth on two strange plays. Will Toffey hit a blooper over third that ended up being a double. One batter later Jeren Kendall hit a routine fly ball to left but outfielder Jared Allen couldn't find the ball and it ended up dropping for a double to push the lead to 2-0.
Middle Tennessee hitters struggled against Johnson, who scattered five hits in eight innings to earn the win. The Blue Raiders had three runners reach second the entire game and no runner reached third.
The Blue Raiders' best scoring chance was the eighth when Bryant and Schnure put together back-to-back, two-out hits. Jarreau drilled a pitch down the third-base line but Vanderbilt third baseman Will Toffey made a great play to rob the Blue Raiders and end the inning.
Next up for Middle Tennessee is a three-game C-USA series at Marshall this weekend.
