MT falls 3-1 at Marshall
Box Score
CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Runs were at a premium in the opening game of a three-game series between Middle Tennessee and Marshall here Friday afternoon, and the Blue Raiders came up on the short end in a 3-1 setback.
Middle Tennessee's hitters were handcuffed throughout the game against Marshall starter Chase Boster, who gave up two hits in 6-2/3 innings to earn the win. Blue Raider batters finished with just three hits in the setback.
Kaleb King's double and singles by Kevin Dupree and Will Schnure accounted for the Middle Tennessee hits.
Despite the setback, Middle Tennessee (23-18, 14-5) remained tied with Florida Atlantic for the league lead and the Blue Raiders hold the tiebreaker; however, the loss against Marshall (14-26, 7-12) still stung.
Blue Raider senior pitcher Johnathan Frebis battled and pitched well enough to win. The lefty scattered six hits and allowed two runs, both earned, in his 5-2/3 innings of work. Frebis settled into a rhythm by the middle innings and struck out seven while walking three. Frebis' problem was that he pitch count was up by the middle innings as he was behind in the count early.
"Frebis looked like he may give up a lot today but then he settled in and really battled and gave us a chance to win," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "His effort was good enough to keep us in the game. We just didn't hit. You are not going to win many games when you get three hits and make (two) errors."
Boster had a perfect game through five innings, but King broke up the perfect game and no-hitter with a leadoff double off of the top of the fence in left field to start the sixth inning. King moved to third on Austin Bryant's groundout and scored on Brad Jarreau's long sacrifice fly to center to tie the game 1-1.
Marshall had taken a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the third. After Middle Tennessee battled to get even, Marshall came right back with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth when D.J. Gee doubled and scored on Aaron Bossi's one-out single to make it 2-1.
The Thundering Herd picked up a big insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when they scored an unearned run to push the advantage to 3-1.
The loss ended a five-game conference win streak for Middle Tennessee, which returns to action Saturday at 6 p.m. Junior Nathan Hoffmann is expected to earn the start for the Blue Raiders.
