BEKLEY, W. Va. – Middle Tennessee's pitching was solid but the hitters couldn't muster enough offense as the Blue Raiders split their doubleheader against Marshall, winning the opener 2-1 and dropping the nightcap, 2-0, at Epling Stadium here Sunday.
The Blue Raiders had a great chance to complete the sweep of the doubleheader and win the series; however, Marshall's pitchers were equal to the task.
Middle Tennessee (24-19, 15-6) remains tied with Florida Atlantic for the C-USA lead.
"Our pitching kept us in all three games this weekend but we didn't deliver at the plate," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "It was a well-pitched series on both sides but it is frustrating to get those efforts on the mound and win just one game."
Nate Hoffman (4-1) was electric in the opener as he stymied the Thundering Herd bats through six innings to earn the win. Hoffmann pitched six shutout innings, struck out a career-high seven batters and scattered four hiits. He allowed just one hit – a bunt single – through the first four innings.
The junior righty had a runner reach third just twice in his six innings of brilliance before giving way to closer Nathan Foriest. Marshall was able to get two on with two outs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Hoffmann pitched out of both jams in a 2-0 game.
The game got interesting in the bottom of the seventh – and final – inning when Marshall's first three batters reached against Foriest. The veteran lefty showed great poise to come back and get a strikeout and two groundouts to notch the save in a 2-1 victory.
Middle Tennessee went on top 1-0 in the top of the third when Will Schnure drew a leadoff walk, Brad Jarreau singled and Ronnie Jebavy walked to load the bases. Jared Allen grounded into a double play that enabled to Schnure to score the go-ahead run.
The Blue Raiders got a huge insurance run in the fifth when Austin Bryant drilled a leadoff triple into right and scored on Brad Jarreau's sacrifice fly to left field to stake Middle Tennessee to a 2-0 lead.
Jarreau, Jebavy and King led the Blue Raiders offensively with two hits each. Jarreau was 2-for-3 with one RBI. King was 2-for-3 and Jebavy was 2-for-4. Schnure reached base all three times, drawing two walks and getting hit by a pitch.
Starter Tyler Troutt provided another solid effort in the second game of the twinbill. Troutt went 4-2/3 innings, scattered five hits and allowed two runs, one earned. The lefty struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Reliever Sam Alton came on in relief and pitched 1-1/3 innings of one-hit baseball, striking out three and walking none.
While the Blue Raider pitching was solid, Marshall starter Michael Taylor was equal to the task as he handcuffed Middle Tennessee into the seventh inning.
The Blue Raiders managed six hits in the nightcap. Jarreau and Kevin Dupree led the attack as they combined for four of the six base knock. Dupree was 2-for-3, and Jarreau was 2-for-4. Allen and Schnure also had base hits.
Marshall (15-27, 8-13) scored an unearned run in the fourth with two out to break a scoreless tie and it added another run in the fifth to go up 2-0.
Middle Tennessee had opportunities but could not come through with a clutch hit. The Blue Raiders had runners at first and second with one out in the third but came up empty. They had runners at second and third and one out in the sixth but Kaleb King struck out and Dustin Delgado was robbed of a base hit by shortstop Sergio Leon to end the inning.
The Blue Raiders made one more push in the seventh. Schnure drew a one-out walk and Jarreau followed with a single, but Jebavy flew out to left and Allen struck out to end the threat.
Middle Tennessee will return to action at Lipscomb Tuesday. First pitch is 6 p.m.
