Box Score Season Stats
NASHVILLE – Things started well for Middle Tennessee in its game at Lipscomb but the middle innings proved damaging in an 11-3 setback at Ken Dugan Field Tuesday night.
The Blue Raiders (24-20) built a 3-0 lead through four innings only to see the Bisons (27-15) score 11 unanswered runs in the fifth through seventh innings to erase the deficit. Five of the 11 runs were unearned as a pair of two-out errors proved detrimental in the sixth.
"We played terrible defensively in that inning," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "It was all downhill from there."
Middle Tennessee hitters had eight hits through six innings but didn't get another base knock until the ninth inning against the Lipscomb bullpen.
Austin Bryant and Ronnie Jebavy led the hit parade. Bryant just missed hitting for the cycle. He was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, single and two runs scored. The triple was Bryant's fifth of the season and tied him for fifth on the single-season triples list. Jebavy was 2-for-5.
Brad Jarreau was 1-for-3 with two RBI, Dustin Delgado was 1-for-3 with one RBI, Kevin Dupree was 1-for-3 with a double and Jake Ingold was 1-for-3 for Middle Tennessee.
Senior starter Garrett Ring gave Middle Tennessee a strong effort on the mound. Ring went five innings, allowed two hits and two runs and left with a 3-2 lead. He was efficient and generally pitched ahead in the count as Middle Tennessee starters continued to produce efforts that gave the team a chance to win.
Unfortunately, for the Blue Raiders, the defense and bullpen couldn't hold the lead.
"Garrett did a good job and he battled and competed," McGuire said. "He gave us five strong innings with the lead. After that inning it was just a disaster."
Middle Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Bryant led off the inning with his fifth triple of the season and second in as many games, and scored on Delgado's opposite field single.
The Blue Raiders tacked on two more in the fourth and Bryant was once again in the middle of the action. Michael Adkins drew a one-out walk and Bryant delivered a two-out double to put runners at second and third. Jarreau provided a clutch two-out single up the middle to score Adkins and Bryant and provide Middle Tennessee with a 3-0 cushion.
Lipscomb finally got to Ring in the bottom of the fifth when Hunter Hanks had a leadoff home run. Chucky Vazquez was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on consecutive groundouts as Lipscomb narrowed the gap to 3-2.
Freshman reliever Blake Stansberry came on in relief of Ring and gave up back-to-back hits before getting a strikeout. Stansberry then gave way to senior Kooper Kessler, who walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Kessler then got a strikeout for the second out and then appeared to be out of the inning when he coaxed a ground ball to third; however, Jake Ingold's throwing error allowed two runs to score and extended the inning.
Kessler had a two-strike count on the next batter when catcher Michael Adkins attempted to pick a runner off of first. His throw went into the bullpen and allowed two more unearned runs to score. By the time the dust had settled, Lipscomb scored five unearned runs to take a 7-3 lead. The Bisons added four runs in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead to 11-3 and earn the win.
Middle Tennessee will return to action at Tennessee Tech Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
