MT takes down TTU 7-5 in 10
COOKEVILLE – Keaton Baker had worked overtime to have the opportunity and moment he realized at Tennessee Tech here Wednesday.
The senior pitcher provided the final two innings of no-hit baseball to earn his first career win as Middle Tennessee turned back Tennessee Tech 7-5 in 10 innings at Bush Stadium.
The win was especially gratifying for Baker, who suffered a season-ending arm injury against Tennessee Tech in Cookeville his freshman year. Five years and a medical redshirt later, Baker earned his elusive first win and helped Middle Tennessee (25-20) gain some much-needed momentum going into this weekend's series against rival WKU.
"Satisfaction is what I am feeling," Baker said after the game. "This has been a long time coming. I have had so many ups and downs and it's been a battle for me but this is what I have worked to do. It's a good feeling."
Blue Raider skipper Jim McGuire said the win was big for the team – and for Baker, who came to Middle Tennessee as a promising righty from Cordova, Tenn.
"I am really happy for (Baker)," McGuire said. "I don't think I can really put into words how proud I am for him. He has worked hard and for him to earn this win, a lot of people don't realize this is where he had his arm injury as a freshman. He had to have Tommy John surgery and a medical redshirt. It came full circle for him."
Middle Tennessee needed Baker's effort and solid performance to notch the victory after the Blue Raiders blew a two-run lead in the bottom of the eighth.
The score was tied 5-5 going to the ninth and Baker came on with the game hanging in the balance. He retired the Golden Eagles (20-22) in order, including two strikeouts, to force extra innings.
Middle Tennessee came off the deck with two huge runs in the 10th and Baker closed the game in the 10th.
The Blue Raiders regained the lead when Ronnie Jebavy collected a one-out single and came around to score on Jake Ingold's clutch two-out double. Jebavy, who was going on the pitch, scored easily as Ingold's shot got to the wall. Another key at-bat in the inning was Bryant's two-out single to score Ingold and provide a two-run cushion.
Middle Tennessee improved to 5-0 in extra-inning games with all five wins coming on the road. The Blue Raiders pounded out 12 hits and had four players produce multi-hit games.
Ingold was 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored, and Brad Jarreau continued his torrid stretch with a 3-for-5 effort and a run scored. Senior slugger Jared Allen was 2-for-4 with one home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Jebavy was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Kevin Dupree and Bryant had one hit each for Middle Tennessee.
The Blue Raider bullpen was outstanding for the most part. After starter Sam Alton was lifted after allowing three hits, three walks and two runs in two innings, the relief corps combined to limit Tennessee Tech to five hits and three runs over the next eight innings.
Heath Slatton went three innings and allowed two hits, one run, before giving way to Will Small. The sophomore righty pitched two innings of one-hit baseball before closer Nathan Foriest came aboard. Foriest struck out the first two Tech hitters he faced before giving up back-to-back hits and two runs as the Golden Eagles tied the game.
Baker came on to finish and earn the win.
Middle Tennessee scored first without the benefit of a base hit in the second. Allen drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on Dupree's deep sacrifice fly to center to stake the Blue Raiders to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Tennessee Tech came back with a two-spot to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second but the Blue Raiders quickly got it even when Jarreau provided a one-out double down the third-base line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Dustin Delgado's RBI ground out in the top of the third.
The back-and-forth affair saw Tech regain a 3-2 lead with one run in the bottom of the third, but Middle Tennessee wasted no time in turning the tide.
Allen belted his career-high 11th circuit clout of the season – an opposite field solo shot over the scoreboard in right center – to even the score 3-3 in the top of the fourth. Ingold followed with a single and later scored on Kaleb King's RBI groundout to take a 4-3 lead.
Allen helped the Blue Raiders add to the lead with a clutch at-bat in the top of the fifth. Jebavy, who had singled, stole second with two outs and Allen promptly followed with a double down the third-base line to put Middle Tennessee on top 5-3.
Jarreau was not only a factor at the plate but his strong right arm was also key in the outfield. The sophomore standout provided his fourth outfield assist of the season when he delivered a perfect throw to the plate to nail Jordan Hopkins for the final out of the fifth inning.
The Blue Raiders will open a huge three-game series against rival WKU Friday at 7 p.m. The game is a national broadcast on Fox Sports 2.
