Blue Raiders Fall to No. 6 Alabama

DECATUR, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee softball team (15-20) suffered a 11-0 setback to No. 6 Alabama Wednesday evening at Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.
Junior Kelci Cheney suffered the loss and fell to 9-12 on the year while allowing six runs on three hits after notching her 18th start of the season. Sophomore Megan Chocallo came in to put 2.1 innings of work to allow four runs (two earned) on seven hits.
Senior Caitlin McClure pitched the final inning to allow zero hits and a run (zero earned).
Freshman Cor'Nisha Birdsong tallied a hit and a stolen base, putting her in second place alone with 33 swipes, passing Ashley Cline (2007). Junior Kiarra Freeman and freshman Morgan Harris both notched singles while junior Megan Griffith tallied a double.
The Crimson Tide showed why they're the sixth-ranked team in the nation as they wasted no time in taking a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first on just two hits in a pair of home runs.
Middle Tennessee threatened in the top half of the inning when Birdsong reached base off an Alabama error before stealing second and Cortez reaching base thanks to a walk. Junior Carlie Jenkins laid down a sac-bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out, but MT couldn't plate the runners.
After Alabama added a run in the second and third to go up 9-0, Birdsong and Freeman got on base with back-to-back singles. Senior Alma Cortez moved both runners on a sacrifice bunt with one out but the Crimson Tide forced a pair of fly outs to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth, MT again had scoring opportunities with the bases juiced and one out. Griffith led off the inning with a double to left center followed by a Harris single up the middle, and sophomore Austyn Whaley reached first with a walk.
However, the Blue Raiders hit into a double play to prevent MT from scoring.
Alabama then tacked on two more runs in the fourth to take an 11-0 lead, ensuring the run-rule win.
The Blue Raiders will return to Conference USA action this weekend with Marshall visiting Blue Raider Softball Field beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
