Blue Raiders end set losing streak, but fall to Seattle U 3-1
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (1-10) played one of their most exciting matches of the year Monday, however they dropped their ninth straight as they lost to Seattle University (5-4) in four sets at Alumni Memorial Gym.
The Raiders looked as good as they have all season as they achieved more total kills than the Redhawks (54-50), more assists (48-45) and more digs (44-40). But Seattle U outhit MT .254-.214 and outscored the girls in blue by a miniscule total of four points for the match to help seal the Raiders' fate.
Chelsea Ross led all scorers with 28 kills as Rachel Shaughnessy led the team with a .611 hitting percentage. Elise Watford also hit .400 and Brianna Pannone had a team season high 32 assists as MT was able to end a 17 set losing streak in the second set of the match.
The first frame was arguably the most excited played by the Raiders all season. Neither team led the set by more than three points. After Seattle U stretched their lead to 17-14 midway through the frame, MT went on a 6-2 run to take the lead 20-19. It looked as though the Raiders set losing streak was over, but the Redhawks saved four set points as they pushed the frame long, winning it 30-28.
Seattle U took a quick 3-1 lead in the second set, but the Raiders battled back to take the lead at 4-3. There were eight ties and three lead changes in the second frame as each time MT looked to have control the Redhawks battled back. Miri Shade came up with one of her six kills to put the Raiders on top for good at 20-19. They finished the set on a 5-2 run, taking it 25-21 and evening the match 1-1.
The Redhawks took control of set three early as they cruised out to an 8-4 lead. They looked to have complete control up seven at 12-5 midway through the frame. But the Blue Raiders weren't done as they battled back, shrinking the lead to one on three separate occasions. However, Seattle U held on to take the set 25-23, and take control of the match 2-1.
Seattle U again took an early lead in the fourth frame 5-1. The Raiders were able to manage the gap until a 4-1 run of their own shrunk the gap to two at 10-8. Each team traded blows from there as MT was able to draw even twice, at 19-19 and at 20-20. But from the latter tie, the Redhawks closed out the set on a 5-1 run to take the frame 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Middle Tennessee kicks off conference play on Wednesday against UAB at Alumni Memorial Gym. The match begins at 6pm and will conclude a stretch where the Raiders play five matches in five days.
