Blue Raiders end nine-match losing streak by sweeping Blazers
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (2-10) snapped a nine match losing streak Wednesday by earning their first conference win of the season over the UAB Blazers (4-8). The Blue Raiders were dominant early, then had to put together an exciting finish to take the match 3-0.
Chelsea Ross once again led the way with 20 kills and a career high .457 hitting percentage, but there was more than just one Raider on the attack in the sweep. Rachel Shaughnessy impressed again, only with five kills but another high hitting percentage at .556. Freshman LaVondria Covington showed her talent as well as she hit .545 with a career high seven kills.
Middle Tennessee got going early as they sprinted out to a 3-1 lead. UAB came back, however, and took the lead at 8-6 before the Raiders won three straight points to go back on top 9-8. The set was neck and neck from there as the teams combined for nine ties and four lead changes. MT finally took control as at 19 all they went on a 6-1 run to close out the first frame 25-20 and take their first match lead since the Notre Dame match, 1-0.
The Blue Raiders weren't satisfied with just an early set victory however. Each team traded the lead until MT was able to get hot and went on a 9-2 run to take a 12-6 advantage. The lead stayed at six until Gabby Deshotel earned a kill for UAB at 17-11. That ignited the Blazers to an 8-3 run which cut the lead to 20-19. UAB stayed close from that point on, but Ross's ninth kill of the match sealed the second frame for MT 25-23.
UAB began the second set on a mission. They cruised out to an early 8-2 lead, but MT battled back to earn eight of the next 12 points. The Raiders cut the lead to one 10-9, 14-13 and 15-14, but then the Blazers were able to push the lead back out with a 5-1 run to 20-15. From that point, MT showed a resiliency that had been missing at times this season. From down 20-15 the Raiders went on a 10-3 run to close the set in dramatic fashion 25-23, win their second match of the season, and begin conference play 1-0.
Middle Tennessee will finish their non-conference slate this weekend as they travel to Blacksburg, Va. To participate in the Hokie Invitational. The team will play the Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday at 6pm CST before finishing up the tournament on Saturday with two matches. MT will face the Liberty Flames at 11:30am CST and the Chattanooga Mocs at 4pm CST.
