MT loses opening match 3-0 to Hokies
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Middle Tennessee (2-11) dropped a tough match to the Virginia Tech Hokies (8-2) on Friday 3-0 at Cassell Coliseum to open the Hokie Invitational.
The Blue Raiders struggled the first and third sets to get much momentum in the sweep as they didn't seem to have an answer for either Ashley Battle or Lindsey Owens. Both girls had 15 kills each for the Hokies and Owens hit .467 along with teammate Rhegan Mitchell who hit .417.
Middle Tennessee was led again by Chelsea Ross with nine kills as Rachel Shaughnessy and LaVondria Covington each put in seven. However, as a team the Raiders hit just .174 with 16 attack errors. Virginia Tech also had nearly twice as many digs as MT with 47 to the Raiders' 26.
The Hokies came out ready to play in the first frame. Tied 3-3, Virginia Tech went on a 9-3 run to take a 12-6 lead and never looked back. Owens led all scorers with seven kills in the set and hit .583 to lead the Hokies to a 25-14 first set victory.
Middle Tennessee attempted to get back in the match in set as they hung with Virginia Tech until the end. The frame was tied 17 times and saw six lead changes as Ross led the Raiders with four kills in the set. MT had the lead at 21-20, but after an Ashley Battle kill Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run to finish the set out 25-21 and take a 2-0 match lead.
The play of Middle Tennessee in the second set, seemed to awaken the Hokies for the third frame. Virginia Tech jumped out to a 5-1 third frame lead and cruised from there. The Raiders hit a dismal .147 in the set as a team and never could get much momentum as the Hokies closed out the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
MT will play the Liberty Flames in their second match of the Hokie Invitational Saturday at 11:30am CST in Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va. The Flames lost the first match of the tournament in three sets to the Chattanooga Mocs who the Raiders will finish the tournament with at 4pm CST Saturday.
