Raiders earn second win this week, douse Flames
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Middle Tennessee (3-11) earned their second win in the last three matches with a 3-0 sweep of the Liberty Flames (4-7) on Saturday at the Hokie Invitational in Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
Miri Shade broke through to have a nice match as she led all scorers with 12 kills. Rachel Shaughnessy continued to play well as she earned six kills and hit .667 for the match. Redshirt Freshman LaVondria Covington also had another career match as she surpassed her career high with eight kills, a mark she just set in the Raiders last victory last Wednesday against UAB. Covington also hit .800 for the match.
The Blue Raiders came out hitting on all cylinders as they won five of the first six points in the first frame. Liberty was not going to go down lightly, however as they turned on a 16-10 run to go ahead by two at 17-15. But with the help of Shade, who had six kills in the first set, MT was able to rattle off eight consecutive points of their own from there to retake the lead 23-17. At that point, it was just a matter of finishing the frame, which the Blue Raiders did, 25-19 to take a 1-0 match lead.
Each team traded points early in the second frame until Middle Tennessee took seven straight points for a 10-5 lead. The Raiders then were able to manage the gap as they finished the set 15-11 to win 25-16 for a 2-0 match lead. Covington had a good frame as she hit .750 with three kills to lead MT.
The third set was tight to start, but the Blue Raiders used an 11-3 run to take control and up their lead to 16-7. Covington again shined as all three of her attacks became kills, Shade added three more kills and hit .600, and Makila York hit .667 with two kills of her own. The team hit .444 for the final frame and cruised on to a 25-17 set win to take the match 3-0.
The Raiders will finish the tournament today at 4pm CST when they face the Chattanooga Mocs. The Mocs are 10-2 on the season after a sweep of Liberty yesterday and a tight five set win over the host Virginia Tech Hokies earlier today.
