Raiders drop tough four-setter to Chattanooga
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Middle Tennessee (3-12) dropped a heartbreaker to the Chattanooga Mocs (11-2) 3-1 on Saturday to close out the Hokie Invitational at Cassell Coliseum.
LaVondria Covington had another great match as she hit .750 with six kills and no errors. Chelsea Ross and Miri Shade each had double digit kills, Ross with 17 tied for most in the match, and Shade with 11 more. Delaney Taylor earned a career high 35 assists for the Blue Raiders, but it was not enough as Middle Tennessee fell in four.
The first began even and continued that way throughout. Neither team led by more than four in the frame, and that was only twice when the Blue Raiders led 21-17 and 22-18. Middle Tennessee hit .366 for the set with 18 kills. Six of those coming from Chelsea Ross, but Miri Shade chipped in with five of her own and Rachel Shaughnessy had another great hitting performance, notching .750. The Raiders held on at the end and took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-22 first frame victory.
Set two began as close as set one. There were eight ties and two lead changes in the second frame, but at 13-13 the Mocs went on a 7-2 run to take control of the set 20-15. Chattanooga clearly had all the momentum as Kristy Wieser led the Mocs with seven kills and a .545 in the set. Lauren Greenspoon also earned 13 assists in the frame and MT seemed to have no answer. The Mocs took the second set 25-19 to even the match 1-1.
The third frame was all Mocs all the time. Chattanooga came out with a vengeance as they took a 7-3 lead and never looked back. Briana Reid picked up four kills for the Mocs as Sarah Batterton and Lauren Gainer each earned three kills and hit over .500 for the frame. Middle Tennessee struggled as they had nine attack errors to just eight kills in the set. The Mocs took the frame 25-14 and took the match lead 2-1.
Set four was back and forth again with 15 ties and eight lead changes. Neither team led by more than three in the set as both battled for control. MT led by three points three different times and each team saved a set point until Chattanooga finally took the frame 27-25 to win the match 3-1.
Middle Tennessee does not play again until Friday when they will travel to San Antonio to take on the UTSA Roadrunners at 7pm. After the match they'll move down the road to El Paso, Texas to play the UTEP Miners on Sunday at 2pm CST.
