Raiders hang tough, but drop three setter to Roadrunners
SAN ANTONIO – Middle Tennessee (3-13, 1-1) fought hard, but dropped another three set match on Friday to the UTSA Roadrunners (10-5, 1-0). UTSA used a hitting percentage of nearly .300 and 12 blocks to eat up the Blue Raiders on the front row to earn the sweep.
Marijeta Runjic led the Roadrunners with 13 kills and a .524 hitting percentage as Dajana Boskovic was second in both categories with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .320.
The Blue Raiders were led by junior Miri Shade who earned 15 kills. Rachel Shaughnessy was also good on the front row with a .444 hitting percentage and four kills. Chelsea Ross hit .207 with 11 kills and 10 digs, several which kept MT in key points during the match. The real difference was in the team hitting percentage as UTSA outhit MT .292-.179 for the match.
Middle Tennessee struggled to get anything going offensively in the first frame. UTSA took four of the first five points in the set and never looked back. The Blue Raiders hit a dismal .037 in the set and could not get any rhythm going in the frame. Dajana Boskovic led the Roadrunners with four kills as the team hit .333 for the first frame in route to a 25-18 victory and a 1-0 match lead.
It didn't take MT long in the second set to get on track as they moved out to an early 3-1 lead. The Raiders were able to manage the gap for the much of the frame and even took the lead by as much as four at 17-13. After UTSA earned four points in a row to tie the set at 17 all, MT went on another quick 3-0 run to take a 20-17 lead. But the Roadrunners buckled down, going on an 8-2 run to close out the frame to take the set 25-22 for a 2-0 match lead.
The Roadrunners took 3-1 third set lead, but Middle Tennessee battled back. The Raiders took the lead a 6-5 and teams went back and forth until the Raiders grabbed a four point lead at 19-15. From that point, UTSA took the lead with a 5-0 run and were able to finish the set out on a 10-4 overall to take a 25-23 set victory to sweep the match 3-0.
Middle Tennessee will travel to El Paso on Saturday where they will prepare to take on the UTEP Miners on Sunday at 1:30pm CST.
