Raiders fall to Miners in four sets
EL PASO, Texas – Middle Tennessee (3-14, 1-2) dropped another tough four set match to the UTEP Miners (7-10, 1-2) 3-1 on Sunday at Memorial Gym.
The Blue Raiders fought hard, but could not seem to overcome early set deficits as they dropped their third straight match. Chelsea Ross led the team again with 20 kills as she hit .405 and now sits 26 kills behind Izabela Kozon for second all-time in Blue Raider history.
Middle Tennessee also used 18 kills from Miri Shade as LaVondria Covington hit .400 and Elise Watford hit .333 with six kills. The Raiders improved each set, hitting under .200 in the first, .242 in the second, and .343 in the third before finishing with .xxx in the fourth.
UTEP fired out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first frame. Middle Tennessee did get themselves back into the set with an eventual 7-1 run to take a 15-10 lead midway through the set. The Miners did not give up easily though as they used eight straight points to take an 18-15 lead and looked to have secured the early match lead. But MT saved three UTEP set points after each team reached 25 and were able to capitalize on their own to take a 28-26 first frame win, and a 1-0 match lead.
The Miners got going quickly in the second set as well, taking a 6-2 lead. The Blue Raiders battled back and with a 4-0 run took the lead at 8-7. The lead eventually grew to 10-9, but UTEP responded with a 10-3 run of their own to take control. They finished off the set 25-20 to draw even in the match at 1-1.
UTEP took another quick start to set three as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead. MT then used a 5-1 run to get within one at 7-6, but from there UTEP used a 9-3 run to take a 14-9 lead and take control of the frame. The Raiders did not give up as they battled back within three and saved three set points, but that 9-3 run spelled the doom for Middle Tennessee as the Miners took the third set 25-22 for a 2-1 match lead.
The Miners took another quick start to the fourth frame as they sprinted to a 4-1 lead. MT battled back to tie the score at 4-4 and used a 7-2 run to take an 8-6 lead. The score was tied again at 11-11, 14-14, and 15-15. But UTEP caught fire again to finish the frame on a 10-3 run to win 25-18 and take the match 3-1.
Middle Tennessee will travel home to continue conference play on Friday with a Homecoming match against the LA Tech Lady Techsters at 7pm at Alumni Memorial Gym. The Blue Raiders will conclude Homecoming weekend with a Sunday evening match against the rival WKU Lady Toppers at 6pm.
