Miri Shade earns career night to lead Raiders
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (4-14, 2-2) snapped a three-match losing streak and evened their conference record with a four-set 3-1 victory over LA Tech (6-11, 0-4) Friday at Alumni Memorial Gym.
The arena was electric as the volleyball team was able to kick off Homecoming Week with a win in front of hundreds of fans, students and alumni. Miri Shade had another career night as she, for the third match in a row, topped her career kill mark. She earned 23 and hit a career high .419 against the Lady Techsters including the final kill of the match to seal the victory.
Chelsea Ross had another big night as well earning 21 kills herself, now just five away from passing Izabela Kozon for second all-time in Blue Raider history. Ross also hit over .300 at .351 as the tandem of Ross and Shade helped the Blue Raiders to ride on to victory.
The records did not stop there as Delaney Taylor also surpassed a career high with 41 assists. She earned double digit assists in each of the final two sets as she also matched a career high with two kills.
LA Tech had three players in double figures in kills as Helena Gunnarsdottir reached 11 kills. Hannah McRee was perfect early on as she turned her first nine attacks into kills, but went just 1-7 from that point on to finish with 10 kills as did Alexa Lister.
Middle Tennessee began the match winning two of the first three points, but the teams continued evenly throughout until the score was tied 14-14. From there the Blue Raiders went on a 7-2 run to open a 21-16 lead capped with a Shade kill. After an attack error by Ross, LA Tech went to Gunnarsdottir for two straight kills to earn a three-point swing and cut the lead to 21-19. But MT was able to earn back momentum to stave off the Lady Techsters and take the first frame 25-21.
The Blue Raiders earned the first point of set two, but quickly got down 5-2 before they tied it at 9-9. From there LA Tech used an 8-2 run to take a 17-11 lead to take control of the second frame. MT battled stayed close and won three straight match points after being down 24-18, but ultimately the Lady Techsters took the second set 25-21 and evened the match 1-1.
Whatever was said at intermission in the Blue Raider locker room must have worked. MT was down early in the third frame 3-1, but caught fire going on a 10-2 run to push out to an 11-5 lead. Shade earned five kills and Ross had four more while hitting .571 in the frame as the Raiders cruised to a 25-17 set win and a 2-1 match lead.
Middle Tennessee was ready to dispose of LA Tech in the fourth, but the pesky Lady Techsters stayed close for much of the frame. Finally, up 18-16, Ross earned her 20th kill of the match and from there the Raiders were able to finish the set on a 7-2 run, earning a 25-18 set win to take the match 3-1. It is the MT's first four set win this season.
The Raiders will need a big crowd on Sunday at 6pm as they host rival WKU. The Lady Toppers are 16-2 on the season, undefeated in conference play, and are receiving votes in the Top 25. It will be a Blue Out, so fans should wear blue to the match and the first 200 fans will receive a custom Blue Out t-shirt for the event.
