Raiders lose 3-1 to rival Lady Toppers
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (4-15, 2-3) stayed tough with rival WKU (17-2, 4-0) on Sunday night, but ultimately lost in four sets 3-1 at Alumni Memorial Gym.
Chelsea Ross used 15 kills to lead all scorers and to pass Izabela Kozon for second all-time in Blue Raider history. Ross now has 1,690 career kills and now sits just 338 behind all-time leader KeKe Deckard who has 2,028.
Makila York impressed as she earned six kills while hitting .500 for the match and Rachel Shaughnessy had another impressive hitting night, hitting .467 with eight kills. Delaney Taylor also seems to be finding her grove as she earned another 30+ assist night with 33.
Middle Tennessee took the first point of the match and also led 2-1 before WKU went on an 8-0 run early in the frame to take a 16-8 lead. The Raiders battled back with a 7-2 run of their own to cut the Lady Topper lead to 18-15. From there MT stayed close but couldn't get back into the set as they lost the frame 25-21 as WKU took a 1-0 match lead.
WKU came out on fire in set two as they jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead. The, as the Raiders have done all year when they've needed a big kill, Taylor found Ross for her fifth kill of the match, giving her 1,680 to pass Izabela Kozon's 1,679 for second on the all-time kills list. That did not seem to give MT the momentum they were looking for, however. Alyssa Cavanaugh picked up five kills in the frame while hitting .833 and Jessica Lucas hit .750 with three kills of her own to lead WKU to a 25-18 set victory and a 2-0 match lead.
The Blue Raiders did catch some momentum to begin the third frame. MT took 12 of the first 15 points of the set and never looked back. WKU did make two 3-0 runs in the frame, but the Raiders used six kills from Ross and a .667 hitting percentage from both Shaughnessy and York to take the set. As a team Middle Tennessee out hit the Lady Toppers .440-.222 as the Raiders fought their way back into the match with a 25-21 win to force a fourth frame.
Middle Tennessee hung tough early in the fourth set as WKU held only a 9-7 lead at one point. But the Lady Toppers used four kills from Rachel Anderson, who hit perfect for the frame, and another four kills Cavanaugh to outhit the Raiders .419-.038 in the final set. From that 9-7 advantage WKU finished the frame on a 16-6 run to take it 25-13 and win the match 3-1.
The Raiders next match will be Friday in Hattiesburg, Miss. as MT will take on Southern Miss at 6pm. From there Middle Tennessee will travel to play Rice on Sunday at 1pm in Houston.
