Raiders drop three setter to Golden Eagles
HATTIESBURG, MISS. – Middle Tennessee (4-16, 2-4) fought hard, but ultimately Southern Miss (17-5, 4-1) was too much to handle as the Golden Eagles beat the Blue Raiders 3-0 at Reed Green Coliseum Friday.
Chelsea Ross led all scorers with 16 kills and Miri Shade chipped in nine, but it was not enough as Stephany Purdue earned 14 kills to lead Southern Miss to the win. The Raiders struggled on the back row as no one had more than 10 digs. MT also was outhit by the Golden Eagles .277-.235 in the loss.
Southern Miss started on fire as they opened an 8-4 lead early in set one. The Blue Raiders would not be denied, however, as they put together a 7-2 run of their own and took the lead 11-10. The teams split the next six points until it was 14-14, but then the Golden Eagles got hot again to finish the frame on an 11-4 run. Despite seven Chelsea Ross kills and four more from Miri Shade, Southern Miss took the first set 25-18 for a 1-0 match lead.
Middle Tennessee began the second set well as they took the early 4-2 lead. After the Golden Eagles came back to tie the frame, MT again put together a run to take a 7-4 lead. But Southern Miss did not go away easily. They earned five of the next six points and took the lead 9-8. From that point the Raiders did not lead again as Southern Miss used seven kills from Stephany Purdue to take the frame 25-19 and earn a 2-0 match lead.
The Blue Raiders were able to keep the third close for a while as it was tied nine times and MT had the lead six times including a 20-19 lead. But Southern Miss was again able to close out the Raiders with a 7-3 run. The Golden Eagles took the final frame 25-22 for a 3-0 match win.
Next up for the Blue Raiders will be Rice who is 13-5 overall and 3-1 in Conference USA. MT will travel to Houston to take on the Owls Sunday at 1pm.
