MT defeats USM at home, 1-0
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Kelsey Brouwer notched her fifth shutout of the season and Grace Summers provided the game's only goal as the Middle Tennessee soccer team defeated Southern Miss, 1-0, on Friday night.
"I think we did well in the first half, but we panicked a little bit in the second half," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "At the end of the day, our objective was to get one more goal than they did and that's what we did."
The Blue Raiders (5-3-1, 1-0 C-USA) played one of their most-solid opening periods of the season. The offense took several chances and Grace Summers drove a pass from Tori Hawkins into the back of the net in the 14'. The Southern Miss (2-5-3, 0-1 C-USA) defense looked lost on the goal as the two MT attackers were able to connect with ease.
The MT offense continued its charge to the tune of nine shots during the first 45 minutes, versus only three from the visitors.
Up 1-0 at the break, the Blue Raiders seemed content to play possession and rest on their lead. That's where Brouwer shined.
USM managed six shots, two on goal during the final stanza and Brouwer was able to turn the Golden Eagles away each time. She had to leap to punch a ball over the bar on one of her four saves on the night.
With her four stops, Brouwer moved into second place in the MT record book with 253 career saves.
Summers finished the game with four shots, all on goal and led MT to a, 11-9, shots advantage.
The Blue Raiders will hit the road for their next C-USA contest and will travel to UAB for a Sunday matchup. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
