Harris pours in 22 points to lead Raiders
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A thriller in E.A. Diddle arena fell the Blue Raiders' way as a Darnell Harris tip-in proved to be the winning shot in a 66-64 win against rival WKU.
Reggie Upshaw collected his seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out three assists. Harris led the Blue Raiders in scoring on the night with a season-high 22 points while Giddy Potts added 11 and Perrin Buford totaled 10.
Middle Tennessee (15-6, 7-2) shot just 38.3 percent from the field, but held WKU (11-11, 3-6) to just 37.0 percent. MT also committed only nine turnovers on the night while totaling 11 assists, a far cry from the three assists and 14 turnovers in the previous outing.
Middle jumped out on WKU with an early 27-11 lead through 13 minutes of play. After enduring a five-minute scoring drought, the Raiders got hot again before halftime.
A monster slam by Joshua Phillips got the bench off its feet, but a buzzer-beating layup by Jacob Ivory put an exclamation point on the first half, as the Raiders entered the locker room up 36-18.
Upshaw was everywhere in the first half, totaling nine points, eight boards and two assists in 18 minutes of action.
WKU gained some momentum out of the break and at the 6:05 mark took their first lead since the score was 2-0.
With just over three minutes remaining Harris hit a clutch three to tie the game back up at 59. A steal by Edward Simpson followed by two Harris free throws put the Raiders back in the lead momentarily.
WKU made one of two free throw attempts to grab a 62-61 lead with 39 seconds remaining before Harris was sent back to the charity stripe.
The Raiders and Toppers traded free throws giving WKU a 64-63 advantage before head coach Kermit Davis called a timeout with 21 seconds remaining to draw up a play.
Upshaw missed on his attempt but Harris got the tip-in to give the Raiders back the lead.
On the ensuing possession WKU turned the ball over and sent Harris to the line again with six seconds remaining and a one-point lead.
Harris made one of two before WKU missed a layup at the buzzer that would have sent the game to overtime.
