Four Blue Raiders to compete
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team will travel to Nashville this weekend to compete in the Commodore Scramble, hosted by Vanderbilt.
The Blue Raiders will compete against Belmont, Lipscomb, Louisville and Tennessee Tech, as well as the Commodores. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore, Jacob Pugh, Miguel Negre Fernandez and Gian Issa will represent MT.
"There are five singles matches and three doubles matches this weekend, so this tournament will be a grind," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "These matches will be a great physical and mental test, and will give us the experience we need going into the spring season."
Morell will look to improve on his 2-3 singles record thus far in the fall season when he takes the court this weekend. The sophomore earned victories against Thais Minet of Lipscomb and Mate Virag from Northern Kentucky in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional before losing a tight match to Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen.
Pugh started his sophomore fall season strong with two wins at the Coach Dale Short Shootout at the Adams Tennis Complex, including triumphs over Austin Peay's Chad Woodham as well as Austin Boaz from Chattanooga. Pugh will return to competition this weekend for the first time since that event.
In only one event this fall, Negre was 3-1 at the ITA All-Americans, with straight set wins over Tennessee's Steven Karl, North Carolina's Blaine Boyden and Colin Markes of Texas, before dropping a Round of 32 match in three sets to Michael Weindl of Conference USA foe Old Dominion.
Starting this fall with an even 2-2 record is Issa. The junior earned a victory against Elliot Ward from South Dakota State in the consolation round of the ITA All-Americans, as well as an opening round win at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional against IUPUI's Steven Christie.
Competition will start Friday morning with doubles action at 9 a.m., followed by singles play at 2 p.m. That format will be repeated on Saturday and Sunday.
