MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – With five wins away from the Murphy Center already under their belt, the Blue Raiders begin a two-game road swing tomorrow with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Belmont.
Middle Tennessee and the Bruins are facing off for the 37th time with MT leading the series 21-15.
The Raiders (9-1) got the best of the Bruins by a score of 83-62 in the Murphy Center a season ago to snap a three-game streak in the series by Belmont. Middle has not won at the Curb Event Center since Dec. 10, 2005.
"It really is becoming a great rivalry," Head coach Kermit Davis said. "[Belmont Head Coach] Rick [Byrd] and I decided as long as we're the coaches here we are going to play every year. Sometimes it doesn't come at the most opportune times because both teams are usually good, but it's a game I think both fan bases look forward to.
"I know we'll have a lot of Middle Tennessee people there tomorrow night and they'll have a good crowd so I think it's going to be a really good college game."
The Blue Raiders are led into the contest by hot-shooting guard Giddy Potts, who is averaging 20 points per game over the last three contests while making 11 of 22 3-pointers during the stretch. He notched a season-high 27 points in the blowout against Vanderbilt and pulled down nine boards.
Senior forward JaCorey Williams leads MT in scoring on the season at 19.0 points per game while fellow senior Reggie Upshaw adds 14.0 points per game. Each of the three are collecting at least 5.8 rebounds per game on the year.
Belmont senior Evan Bradds is the heart of the Bruin offense, averaging 21.3 points per game. He also adds a team-best 9.0 rebounds per game.
The Bruins (4-3) are currently on a three-game winning streak with a pair of two-point wins against rival Lipscomb sandwiched around a road win at Pepperdine. In their most recent outing the Bruins escaped with a 78-76 overtime win at Lipscomb.
"Belmont has played a really difficult schedule," Davis stated. "They are undefeated at home and have three losses at Vanderbilt, at Florida and at Rhode Island. They beat a really good Western Kentucky team 90-69 at Belmont.
"As for their personnel, you've got to start with [Evan] Bradds. He's one of the best low post scorers in all of college basketball with some guys around him who can really shoot it and it's a team that always plays well at home. We'll have to be at our very best."
