Blue Raiders win seventh straight
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Just when you started to wonder what more Brea Edwards could do to amaze, she goes out and plays one of her best all-around games.
Edwards poured in a career-high 31 points on the strength of a season-high six 3-pointers, one shy of her career high, to lead Middle Tennessee to a 68-57 win against visiting Louisiana Tech in front of 3,316 at Murphy Center. The senior guard also produced her fifth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.
The Blue Raiders (16-7, 10-2) won their seventh straight game and remained one game behind C-USA leader UTEP for the top spot in the league race. While Edwards represented almost half of Middle Tennessee's offense and enjoyed another solid shooting night, she had plenty of help in victory.
Ty Petty finished with 12 points, five assists and six steals in another stellar all-around performance, while sophomore Abbey Sissom added 10 points and dished out four assists to lead a solid collective effort by the Blue Raider backcourt, which combined for 53 of the team's 68 points.
"Our guard play was really good for the most part," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We knew Louisiana Tech had been playing very well and this was an important game in the standings. We also knew it would be a physical game, and it was. I thought our young ladies held in there and played well. Edwards had a good shooting night and Sissom stepped up and hit some big shots for us. Petty ran our team the way she has been running our team lately. Can we improve? Absolutely, but I also like how we are competing and the effort we are playing with."
In addition to the strong guard play, forward Rebecca Reuter provided seven points and freshman post Alex Johnson chipped in six.
Middle Tennessee's defense was solid in victory as it held the Lady Techsters (12-10, 7-4) to 37 percent from the field but, more importantly, really clamped down in the second half when the game was on the line.
Leading 32-28 at intermission, the Blue Raiders came out in the second half and held Louisiana Tech without a field goal the first 5:34 of the third quarter to keep momentum on its size. Edwards' third trey of the game provided Middle Tennessee with a 39-30 lead with 5:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Brooke Pumroy finally ended the field goal drought for Louisiana Tech with a 3-pointer at the 4:26 mark to cut the deficit to 39-33; however, Reuter scored on a short jumper and Edwards followed with her fourth 3-pointer – and second in a two-minute span – to push the lead to 11, 44-33.
The Blue Raiders allowed just eight second-half field goals to hold Louisiana Tech at bay.
Sissom's 3-pointer with 5:14 remaining provided the largest lead of the game, 62-44, and provided much needed breathing room down the stretch.
Middle Tennessee will play host to Southern Miss Saturday at 5 p.m. It is the annual Play4Kay Pink Game.
